Stanly County’s Second Confirmed Case of Rabies in 2025
Stanly County Health Department has received confirmation of its second case of rabies in 2025. The North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health has confirmed a positive rabies test for a raccoon in the Norwood area associated with an exposure that took place on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Rabies is a deadly disease that is most often spread through the bite or saliva of a rabid animal. It can also be transmitted if infected saliva comes into contact with your eyes, nose, mouth, or an open wound.
The best way to prevent rabies is to prevent exposure. To keep yourself safe, practice these precautions:
-Do not approach or touch wildlife alive or dead
-Do not feed wildlife or attract wildlife to your yard
-Supervise pets while outside
-Keep pets vaccinated against rabies
If you have potentially been exposed to a rabid animal, immediately wash the exposed area with soap and clean running water for 15 minutes. Please contact Stanly County Health Department immediately at 704-982-9171.
If you see an animal that is behaving abnormally, call Stanly County Animal Protective Services at 704-986-3881. Signs of rabies in animals include aggression, excessive drooling, and staggering.
