“This is NOT about the food.” 📦
Box feeding is one of our favorite tools - not because of the food… but because of what it reveals. 👀
When we’re doing this, we actually don’t care if he eats the food. That sounds strange to say, right?
But the truth is, we’re not focused on the outcome (an empty box). We’re focused on the conversation the dog is having with the environment. 💬
In the first video, Obie is unsure.
He hesitates, he’s not confident enough to put his head into the box.
In the second video, we are outside, in a busy environment.
Same dog. Same exercise. And he completely ignores the world around him.
So what changed?
👉 Confidence.
When we see a dog struggling, it’s easy to think it’s just a training issue.
But in Obie’s case, the root of the problem is not about the exercise…
It’s about how he feels.
A dog who doesn’t feel secure in his environment will struggle even with simple things.
Not because he doesn’t understand - but because internally, he’s not safe. 📉
And this is where many things can get misunderstood.
A dog who lacks confidence often tries to control his environment.
He might guard, he might react, he might “fire”…
not because he wants to fight, but because he doesn’t trust that he is safe.
To fix the outward behavior, we have to rebuild the internal dog. 🦾
That’s why we don’t focus on “making him do it.”
We focus on building confidence, clarity, and trust.
Because when the dog starts to feel safe…
everything else begins to change. 💛
Obie is learning that he can trust the world.
And that changes everything.
