So we have Frank, Butterfly, Erik, Bob, Leife, Mrs. Bjorn, Rose, Peggy and Molly.

Bob is the runt at 2lbs 5oz. Frank and Mrs. Bjorn are the biggest 3lbs 7oz. Then the rest are 3lbs to 3.4lbs

I think she is officially a shed hunting dog for life! The last time we came to this are for her shed dog training, it was horrible. All I can say is WOW!! It is amazing what a couple days have done for her.

I am more and more convinced that when you are training a shed hunting dog, you have to build on the connections. Even if your training is not perfect, you have to find what it is about that specific shed hunting session that is going right and focus on it.

It was amazing to watch her smell the sheds in the wind! As soon as she caught even a wiff of them, her nose was straight into the air to track down where the shed was laying.

I wondered when the transition from shed dog training by sight to training by smell happen. Today proved to me, she is a shed hunting dog by smell now! This was by far our best day of shed hunting dog training so far and I can't wait for next week, when we are out looking for sheds again.

This time, its the real thing and we are going to put this shed dog and our training to the test.

When you are training a shed dog or bird dog for that matter, there are going to be days when things just don't go right. This shed hunting experience started out just like I would have expected. We dropped a few sheds to find later, we ran and explored...

Then all hell broke loose! Two minutes into our actual shed dog training, the woods lit up with a fight between some dogs and cotoyes. And it was loud, they were everywhere around us and Freya had a puppy melt down. She would work a little, then whine, find a shed but had no interest in picking it up.

About 15 minutes in, I had completely given up on shed hunting, hoping I could find the few sheds I through out for her. It went almost immediately from shed hunting, to dog obedience school. After watching back the footage, I decided to make this video because it actually wasn't as bad as it seemed at the time. If you ever train a shed dog, you will have these moments. If you ever train a dog period, you are going to have these moments.

In the end, while shed hunting training got put on pause for the day, we still made a ton of progress and I am really proud of how she preformed in the days after. It was a good reminder to not let one tough day define your progress!

Shed hunting training went amazing today! For some reason Freya has been a little less than willing to pick up hard antler sheds. I am not sure if it is because her adult teeth are still not fully in or if she is just having a hard time switching from the shed dummy.

Well today we did something to help her. The first couple of sheds, she would catch their wind and then be right on top of them. It is amazing to watch! But she just wouldn't pick them up. My job at this point is to remind her that its ok, be positive and even though she didn't complete the retrieve, get her excited and happy and tell her how great she did.

The second shed amazingly got better. While she did not bring the shed back to me, she picked it up and carried it a ways before dropping it, picking up a second time and carrying it a ways before dropping it. Again all in on positive reinforcement. The third shed was a silicon dummy and she broght it all the way back per normal.

From there, all but one shed she brought back all the way to me. I was really proud of her. Everyday we are just trying to make connections and build on progress. She is doing amazing!

While it was a short shed hunting traning session, tonight we did something different. Tonight, while we were chasing her dummy shed up and down the field, I was tossing out real sheds into places where we would actually be looking while shed hunting.

The goal for tonight, place some sheds for her and put that shed dog training to work and see if she could pick them up blindly...SHE DID INCREDIBLE!!! I hid 7 sheds and she found all of them. Normally she is very good about retriving but tonight for what ever reason, didnt want to pick them up and bring them back to me.

Out shed dog training is far from over, there are some things to work on for sure. However, all in all, I am so excited to see her continued progress!

Shed Hunting Season is only 2 months away and we are in full trianing mode. One of the things holding us back were all things puppy. Well, in reality she was just losing her baby teeth which made playing fetch a challenge.

Today we stepped up our shed hunting IQ. Many of the sheds I threw landed in deep grass and while we started out with a few easier finds, it got more complex quick.

Shed hunting dogs have to rely on their noses so much, very similar to bird dogs. Today was her 24 week birthday and I am so happy how well her shed dog training is going. Labs really make amazing shed hunting dogs!

Today, Freya also got her final round of vaccinations. I chose to wait until she was a little older to start her schedule and am grateful for that choice. Vaccinations are simple to give and will save you hundreds of dollars on vet bills.
