Big shout-out to this little goober for our travel to and from MO. He has his challenges, but he is such a good dog to travel with. He handled multiple days in rental cars, hotels, airports, a flight, and then a dog show. He's still got a lot of maturing to do, but we love this good boy. ❤️ And having other Shikoku along for different legs of the trip who were also really chill despite how stressful travel can be just reinforced why I love these guys. They can absolutely be sensitive, but also so easy going.

Puppy raisers, what's your go-to vaccine protocol? Do you use canine nomograph results to time vaccines for optimal effectiveness? If you're familiar with nomographs but don't use them, I'd appreciate your perspective as I aim to educate more people about their benefits.
The vaccination guidelines group (VGG) of WSAVA states "The VGG recognises that maternally derived antibodies (MDAs) interfere substantially with the efficacy of most currently available core vaccines that are administered to puppies and kittens early in life. As the level of maternally derived antibodies varies substantially within and between litters, VGG recommends the administration of multiple core vaccine doses to puppies..." It is so important to understand that the sole reason we give multiple rounds of puppy vaccines is not because puppies need so many. It's because there is so much variability in degradation of MDAs and the more frequently vaccinations are given, the shorter the “window of
susceptibility” will be. Nomographs give us that clarity for each litter so that we can base our vaccine timing on actual data for the individual litter rather than basing it off of averages.
If people are worried about cost, this obviously varies from place to place but it was under $50 for my vet to do a serum draw, the test itself is $66, and then I shipped the sample FedEx next day, which I believe at the time was $40. And these go to the University of Wisconsin School of Vet Med.
I'm going to put the link in my bio for anyone who is interested in learning more, and I'll be working on adding this information to my kennel website soon.

A little size comparison for our trio! Rumo is at the top of the standard (possibly over it a smidge) and is about 54lbs. He's packed on weight since being neutered this year, so ideally with fat loss and rebuilding muscle a healthier weight for his height is about 52lbs.
Juniper hovers about 30-31lbs these days. Thankfully she hasn't gained any extra weight since her spay so far, but we'll continue to monitor her. We pay close attention to their weight because excess weight can shorten their lifespans and increase risks for joint problems and other diseases. Genetic screening like hip testing is very important, but since we know these issues come up in Shikoku we can further decrease their risk with appropriate exercise and nutrition!
Fig is about 29lbs, and although she is technically a bit taller than Juniper, she's still young and hasn't filled out completely.

Happy 11th birthday, Rumo!! December is a cool month for us. Dec 24th, 2007 I picked up Signey from her breeder, marking the start of my journey with Japanese dogs. Rumo was born Dec 22nd, 2014, although he didn't join our family until May of 2015. Juniper also got pregnant in Dec 2023, leading to us keeping back Fig. Technically I believe I also found out that Juniper would be mine in Dec 2019 as well. 😆
Hard to believe I've lived with Shiba and/or Shikoku for 18 years now. Especially when the dogs don't look their ages!
I don't think I can ever stop thanking the breeders who have trusted me with dogs. ❤️ Rumo was bred by , Juniper was bred by , and although he's not pictured here because he lives with his guardian home, Kinta is another valued member of our kennel and was bred by and co-owned by . Thank you all!

She's cute I guess ❤️

Update: Unfortunately we won't be having any puppies in the next couple of months, as neither Juniper or Fig got pregnant on their recent cycles. Juniper is now spayed and retired from breeding (she's staying with us), but we'll attempt to breed Fig again in 2026 on her next cycle. Hopefully 2026 will bring many new and exciting things!
