First hatch of the season looks fantastic!!! I am keeping all of these to build my flock. I will have chick's available through the rest of my hatching season. I got my first 2 dominant black erminette chicks! There's a 25% chance of getting dominant white or dominant black birds from spotted and what's cool is dominant white and dominant black birds can produce spotted birds.

The erminettes have been one of my longest standing breed that I have owned. Their good layers and have good meat to carcass ratio especially in the roosters. Plus theit just so pretty and gentle birds!

My new brooder is almost done! Just need to do the doors for the bottom. But the top half is ready for chicks that should be hatching here in a few days. I made these ones taller then my last set so I can adjust the heat lamps higher for the warmer months and longer so they don't grow out of it so fast 😂

Have you ever seen a Rhode Island Red?
A real one??

Heritage (or "old-type") Bred to Standard Rhode Island Reds are considered quite rare.

What used to be one of America's favorite breeds is slowly disappearing and being replaced with mass produced mixed breeds bred solely for short lived egg production.

Single and Rosecomb are APA accepted varieties

Reports suggest there are only about 2,500 of these heritage birds registered in the U.S of both comb types.
It is said that there were only 50 Rosecomb Rhode Island Reds registered around 2010.

Both single and Rosecomb Rhode Island Reds also exist in bantam size.

"Production" Reds found in most feed stores are not the same as the heritage type, which are larger (8+ lb roosters) and darker mahogany red.

While heritage numbers are low, the breed overall graduated from the Livestock Conservancy's critical conservation list in 2023 due to a resurgence in popularity among small-scale keepers.

True Rhode Island Reds are a dual purpose birds.
They are reliable layers and lay for many years.

Due to them not being hybridized specifically for egg production, It is normal for 5 year olds to lay at least 3 eggs per week.

When a layer is "spent" , she can also be used as a baking hen to provide food for the family, an important quality in the early 1900s when self sustainability was key.

We do offer hatching eggs on our website. Our chick list is pretty full until April.
