Pet Parents,

Flathead Pet Emergency has been providing emergency services to the Flathead Valley and surrounding communities since 2008. We strive to provide medical services for your pets when other veterinary practices are closed. The clinic has been trying to hire another full-time veterinarian off and on for the past several years with limited success. We had a period in 2023 where we were fully staffed for 9 months. Sadly, both of our associates had to move on for other personal pursuits and we are left with only one full-time veterinarian. With our schedule as it is, our veterinarian would have to work 12-14 hour shifts 7 days a week which is physically impossible.

Many of you may not be aware but there is a nationwide shortage of veterinarians and many clinics within 200 miles are also hiring with very little success. On top of that shortage, very few veterinarians are looking to work overnight emergency shifts. It’s simply a hard job and a hard timeslot hence the lengthy search for associates.

Unfortunately, we have hit a point where we are forced to make a change. Starting Monday September 30, 2024 we will no longer be able to see patients after midnight during the week and after 10pm on the weekends. We will open at 6pm weekdays and 10am Saturday and Sunday. We will stop seeing non-critical patients 1 hour prior to closing so we have time to finish the appointment. We will still have staff in the building 24 hours a day to provide medical care to stable hospitalized patients and answer your questions when you call. High risk patients or patients that require medical care after we’ve closed will be referred to either of the two emergency clinics in Missoula or WSU emergency in Pullman WA.

We understand that this is not optimal and hope we will find sufficient coverage soon to resume our regular hours.

Did you know? All of the trails in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex are dog friendly!

Our Trail Dog this week is Ernest and he is looking for his hiking buddy! Our Trail Dawgs are these volunteers from Women Who Explore who cleared Meadow Mountain trail with BMWF this summer! This 11-mile roundtrip hike summits Meadow Mountain overlooking the pristine South Fork Flathead river drainage in the Bob Marshall Wilderness

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation and Humane Society of Northwest Montana are teaming up to raise awareness for the Great Fish Community Challenge, happening now through September 13th. You can support both organizations and 78 other local non-profits with a single gift through Whitefish Community Foundation during this community-wide giving campaign. Adopt a mixed breed dog...⁠
There are lots of great dogs out there who lack a home just because they don't have the right pedigree. A mixed breed will likely be healthier, happier, better behaved — and live longer than a purebred of the same age.⁠

Donate to your local shelter...⁠
Not in the position to adopt? You can still help out your local shelter with a donation. Your money goes to things like food, toys and medicine. Every dollar counts!⁠

Volunteer to help out...⁠
Shelters need volunteers to befriend the dogs, play with them and take them for walks. A few hours of your time can make a big difference in their happiness and happy dogs stand a better chance of getting adopted.⁠

WHY NATIONAL MUTT DAY IS IMPORTANT:⁠
All dogs love us for who we are...⁠
Though mixed breed dogs aren't usually as highly regarded as their purebred cousins, they've got lots of love in their hearts. Since most mutts weren't born on Easy Street, they love us even more!⁠

Mixed breeds have better health...⁠
These dogs have hit the genetic lottery. The smaller the gene pool, the less healthy the genes. Your mutt, on the other hand, has a sampling from all over, adding to the dog's overall lifespan and well-being.⁠

Mutts need people, too...⁠
Mixed breed dogs end up at a pet shelter more frequently and they tend to wait longer before getting adopted. National Mutt Day is about getting them the love and attention they deserve.⁠
