The Humble Homestead

The Humble Homestead Welcome to our humble homestead! We’re a family of 5 trying to learn a more sustainable lifestyle.

This is really where I WANT to be. And trust me we get the comments of “what is this the 1950s” or “how much did you have to beat her to get her to want that” and those aren’t the online comments. Those are from real life people that my husband really works with lol.

I guess people can’t comprehend *wanting* to do this.

A few reasons why rabbits are my favorite animal we’ve had on the homestead:

They are our first real chance at a sustainable meat source for our family.

They are fairly hands off when it comes to raising the babies.

They’re easy enough to care for that the our little guys can be very involved with them.

They are purposeful not just for meat but also for their fur, meaning we can get a better nose to tail use. Which means a lot to me.

And of course the best of all, they’re so soft and amazing to cuddle!!!

I am ingredient house hold… 80% of the time.

Social media really is so far from reality. You can really value homemade food and cooking from scratch and also enjoy eating out from time to time.

I should’ve added that learning how to cook from scratch and stretch your groceries is also an amazing skill!

But growing some of your own food does not need to take up a lot of space! There are a lot of content creators who show how abundant their tiny gardens are.

Quail make great dual purpose meat & egg production. They also don’t take up much space either. And same with meat rabbits!

There are a lot of ways to be able to homestead right where you are, you just gotta be a bit creative.

Here’s how to know if your baby rabbits are getting fed by mama.

Mom will typically only feed her babies 2 times a day, in the morning and the evening. So the best time to check is early afternoon and late evening after she’s had a chance to nurse them.

You want round bellies!! You don’t want thin bellies. It seems self explanatory BUT when you’re new it can be so helpful to have even the simple stuff told to you plainly. That’s what I needed my first time around and I am still new to all of this.

I highly recommend getting a mentor that’s near you to be able to ask all of the questions you have.
