This week, State Representative Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park) introduced House Bill 5063, which would provide a tax credit for those who foster an animal through a Michigan animal control, animal protection shelter, or 501(c)(3) rescue. Partners like Rep. McFall are essential to Michigan Humane’s goal of championing and passing legislation that protects and honors pets across the state.

We are hopeful that this legislation will further support our fosters and the vital role they play in a shelter animal's life, specifically our Safety Net Foster Program, which fosters owned animals during times of crisis.

Hi, foster friends! I'm currently working on a research project for my Strategic Marketing Communications program, and I'm pretty excited about it.

I need at least four more respondents to fill out a Qualtrics survey I developed to understand the factors that influence people's approval or disapproval of keeping dogs tethered outside.

We have feral cat shelters available!

We strongly suggest a $5 donation per shelter as the supplies to make these are not free and your donation helps us continue to offer them each year.

They are available while supplies last on a first come first serve basis, beginning Friday at noon.

The shelters are made from foam coolers with an entrance hole cut into two sides to allow the animal using it to escape if needed. They're filled with straw for warmth and the lid is taped on to keep it secure.

Reminders for outdoor winter shelters:

⚠️ If possible, shelters should be kept off the ground a few inches to better protect cats from the cold, standing water and snow.

⚠️ Use straw to insulate- DO NOT use hay, towels or blankets as these soak up moisture making them wet & cold and have been known to freeze to the animal using the shelter.

⚠️ Try to face the entrance to the shelter away from the wind.

⚠️ If you're trying to go a step further, please be sure to only use outdoor-approved heating sources for shelters and for keeping water bowls from freezing. Remember SAFETY FIRST!

Additionally, if you tend to a feral cat/ feral colony please reach out to your local spay/ neuter organizations for help.
Feeding and sheltering ferals is helpful but preventing them from procreating is the most productive thing you can do to help us overcome the stray & feral cat crisis we are facing.

Last week, our favorite Boxer boy had his lil unicorn lump removed. Kudos’ pathology report came back as a noncancerous traumatized follicular cyst. His mom says these are common in Boxers. She’s looking forward to the little Mohawk that’ll grow back in place of his unicorn horn. It’s hard to imagine his head being cuter than it was, but a punk rock hairdo might just do it!
