It’s winter and a good time to read up on various diseases and conditions that can affect our loved pets when they are out and about visiting with other peoples pets. For example going to dog parks (which I don’t recommend) daily walks in the neighborhood (be a kind neighbor and clean up after your dog), and even going on a hike. Keep in mind your dogs health and the health of others. This article is very important to read and remember!

My son brought in 3 baskets of laundry for me to fold from the laundry room. I finished 2 baskets and went to get the 3rd and this is what I found. Mayzee curled up in the basket,Spreckles in between baskets, 2 dogs on the sofa next to me (Carmela is the furthest and Bitsy), then on the floor on either side of my feet are Lacee and Raven. There’s nothing like being surrounded by dogs that love you and want to be near you!

I get several requests each month for Giant Schnauzers. We own one and we can attest that they take a lot of work and energy to raise them and keep one happy. We love our girl but if we were able to do it over, we wouldn’t have taken her on. Miniature Schnauzers are less than 1/3 the size and work.

A Giant Schnauzer just won Best in Show at Westminster—a remarkable achievement for the breed! However, with that recognition comes a surge of interest from people who may not fully understand what it means to own a Giant Schnauzer. Unfortunately, this often leads to impulse purchases, and many of these dogs end up surrendered when their owners realize they cannot meet the breed’s demands.

Giant Schnauzer rescues are already overwhelmed, with 30 to 50 dogs being surrendered each month. This isn’t because they are bad dogs—it’s because too many people get them without truly understanding what they require. Giant Schnauzers are high-energy, highly intelligent working dogs. They need structured training, extensive socialization, and daily physical and mental stimulation. Without it, they can develop behavioral issues, become destructive, or display aggressive tendencies.

Adding to this crisis, backyard breeders will seize this moment to profit from the breed’s sudden popularity. These breeders prioritize quick sales over responsible breeding, often producing puppies without regard for health, temperament, or proper socialization. Many of these poorly bred Giants will end up in inexperienced homes, only to be surrendered when owners realize they are unprepared for the reality of owning such a strong-willed, high-drive breed.

This is not a breed for the casual dog owner. Giants thrive in experienced hands, with owners who are committed to providing leadership, training, and an active lifestyle. If you’re considering getting a Giant Schnauzer, take the time to research the breed thoroughly. Meet reputable breeders who health-test and prioritize temperament. Talk to experienced owners, and honestly assess whether your lifestyle can support the needs of this working breed.

If you love the breed but aren’t fully prepared for the challenge of raising a puppy, consider adoption. Many Giants in rescues need homes because their previous owners underestimated the responsibility. Thoughtful, informed decisions will help prevent more dogs from ending up in shelters and ensure that Giant Schnauzers are placed in homes that are truly equipped for them.

Let’s celebrate this breed responsibly—by making sure they end up in the right homes, not in rescue.

Update: Thank you all for your kind words of condolences and and your prayers! We appreciate you all so much! We will make it through this difficult time by His Grace.

It’s taken me a couple days to process what happened this last Thursday early afternoon. Our son Jonathan has been living with us for the last year in our basement. Thursday we found him dead in his room. We don’t know for sure the cause but will find out when the test results come in. I’ve had a hard time with this. He was 52 and had some major health issues besides dealing with service related PTSD and broken relationships added to it.

Please keep our family and his in your prayers. He has 4 adult children and his 3 brothers Mark, Daniel and Darrel lll (D3). Details of funeral or memorial service will be announced later.
