WELCOME TO THE WORLD PO8!
We are thrilled to announce that this morning RH58 "Rocky" gave birth to a pup in Waikiki, who for now will be known at PO8! This morning at 5:30 our team arrived on site to find a newborn pup on the beach! We were able to set up our semi-permanent fencing about 150 feet away from the mom and pup pair to ensure they are not disturbed. We will be on the beach with the mom and pup every day until weaning to make sure the process goes smoothly for them both!
This is the second time Rocky has given birth in Waikiki, the first time being in 2017 to RJ58 "Kaimana". Rocky typically returns to Kauai to give birth, Hawaiian monk seals tend to return to their birth beaches around 70% of the time! In the coming weeks we will work with a school in the area to gift the pup a name using traditional Hawaiian practices - so look forward to that announcement soon!
Remember, Hawaiian monk seals are an endangered species with only about 1,500 left in the world. We understand that pups born on these beaches are very exciting (we're excited too!), however, please keep your distance. NOAA recommends 150 feet of distance between mom and pup pairs to ensure that the animals are not disturbed so that we can have a healthy seal pup! Mom's with pups are also particularly dangerous and have been known to attack to protect their pups - just one more reason to keep your distance! Lastly, if you ever see a Hawaiian monk seal please call the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at 888-256-9840!
