There are so many little tasks that go into setting up a dog training studio and community space.

Today’s task: unloading chairs, rearranging kennels, and playing a little car Tetris.

It may not be the glamorous part, but I’m really enjoying watching all the pieces come together as I build a space our community needs.

Happy House Hound is getting closer every day.

The finished behavior is only a few seconds long. The dogs patiently waiting until the are released.

It looks calm and simple. But that’s not where we started.

There was bouncing and getting up and not listening and resetting and trying again making it easier being patient with them and slowly helping them understand what I was asking.

That’s the part that matters.

Because training is not about expecting dogs to magically be calm, focused, and perfect. It’s about helping them build the skills they need one step at a time.

Sure, I could have just opened the gate and let them through. But this is one of those small moments that only takes a couple of minutes that can have a lasting impact. And for these dogs, the reward wasn’t just a treat. The reward was real life getting to go through the door or gate after waiting.

That’s the kind of training. I love the most. Practical, kind, realistic, and built around every everyday life.

Dog training isn’t about creating a perfect dog. It’s about building a better relationship.

Behind-the-scenes view of the layout for Happy House Hound’s training studio and community space!

This is where the vision is starting to feel real.

The Studio will be the main training space for group classes, private sessions, workshops, enrichment, and future indoor rentals.

The Learning Nook will be a quieter space for education, decompression, the lending library, and dogs who need a little more support.

The Commons will be the community space, with local artist items, check-in, gathering space, and room for dog people to connect.

Happy House Hound is being built as more than a dog training business. It’s a space for dogs and their people to learn, feel supported, and build a better relationship together.

There is still a lot to do, but this little floor plan makes it feel one step closer.

Dog training isn’t about creating a perfect dog. It’s about building a better relationship.

Dog training isn't about creating a perfect dog. It's about building a better relationship.

Registration is now open for Happy House Hound's first Puppy Foundations and Adult Foundations classes.

These small-group classes focus on the skills that matter in everyday life: communication, confidence, engagement, leash skills, and helping dogs learn how to navigate the world successfully alongside their people. Our goal is progress, not perfection.

While our permanent training space in Juneau is being prepared for its August 1 Grand Opening, we're offering a special series of outdoor launch classes this summer.

Why join now?

🐾 Classes are limited to just 5 dogs, allowing for individualized attention and support.

🐾 Founding class members will receive a custom watercolor-style portrait of their dog created by Happy House Hound owner Charlotte Schwark.

🐾 These portraits will become part of Happy House Hound's story and will be prominently displayed in the studio as part of our Grand Opening celebration.

A lot has changed since my last post here in 2022 celebrating puppy class graduates.

Over the past few years, I kept coming back to the same idea: creating something bigger than just dog training classes. A space centered around communication, enrichment, education, and helping dogs and humans actually live well together in everyday life.

And now… it’s finally starting to happen.

Happy House Hound is officially coming back, and I’m currently working toward opening an indoor training and community space here in Juneau.

The vision includes:
• Group classes
• Puppy foundations
• Workshops and enrichment activities
• Resources for reactive dogs and their humans
• A calm, welcoming environment built around real life, not perfection

There’s still a lot happening behind the scenes right now, but I’m excited to finally start sharing the process again.

P.S. This watercolor was inspired by Bert, whose recent arrival reminded me just how much behavior, communication, and emotional safety shape the lives of both dogs and humans. 🐾
