Every day, I see memes that paint mares as being aggressive.

“Mare vs gelding” — shows velociraptor vs golden retriever.

“Mare owners vs gelding owners” shows mare owners being chased by a tiger vs gelding owners cuddling with it…

The horse industry has painted a narrative that mares are more difficult, more likely to be aggressive and generally more “cranky.”

This results in people labelling these types of behaviours as “mare behaviour” which renders mares’ voices unheard when they try to voice pain.

Pain and stress signals become synonymous with “being a mare.”

It’s a huge disservice to the horse.

It’s also a disservice to women as a whole because even amongst humans, female pain is often shrugged off as hysterical or being over sensitive.

Female outrage is often shrugged off as being hormonal, easily bothered and “just being a woman.”

And then we go and project that onto horses.

In the few studies that have been done on attitude comparisons between mares and geldings, mares actually tested HIGHER for being more adaptable and easy to handle.

But, overall, there was negligible difference between the two sexes.

Meaning that people’s perceptions do not accurately portray reality.

It is NOT normal for a mare to be biting at people all of the time and generally cranky.

This is her trying to communicate something.

Will you listen?

Changing things up and going for an evening walk instead of a morning walk. Love how the moon is framed by the trees.

V and I went for a morning walk and came across vultures still roosting from the previous night. They weren’t ready to take off and were definitely not worried about us.

Can’t wait to start hanging the new skellies!
