Atascosa County Animal Control (ACAC) has served the community since October 2018, working to protect the health, safety, and welfare of both animals and residents. 🐾 WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T FIND PUREBRED DOGS IN SHELTERS?! 🐾

If you are looking for a specific breed, you don't need a breeder—your future best friend is waiting for you right here at Atascosa County Animal Control!

But time is running out for these dogs. We are completely out of kennel space, and because we are the primary facility for the entire county, our intake never stops. This crisis forces us to euthanize for space regularly, and we desperately need our community's help to stop that from happening this week.

You can directly save a life today. Shelter dogs are high-quality, beautiful, and yes—even purebred! Take a look at just a few of the stunning dogs currently waiting in our kennels right now:

From Monday, June 8th through Saturday, June 13th, we are running a $20 Adoption Special for ALL available pets in our care! 🐶🐱

Whether you are looking for a playful pup, a chill dog to lounge with, or a purr-fectly independent cat, we have so many amazing animals waiting to meet you. Our kennel is full of wonderful pets who are ready to bring a lifetime of love and loyalty to your family.

🐾 May 2026 Monthly Recap 🐾

Our team and dedicated rescue partners have been working incredibly hard, and we have some amazing wins to celebrate, alongside some reminders of how much we need your ongoing support!

Here is a quick look at the data:

🔹 Total Intakes: We welcomed 176 animals into our care last month.
🔹 Adoptions & Wins: 84 pets found their forever homes (50 dogs and 34 cats), and 23 lost dogs were successfully reunited with their owners.
🔹 Rescue Transfers: 31 pets were safely transferred to our dedicated rescue partners.
🔹 The Hard Reality: Out of 219 total outcomes, 81 were euthanasias (46 dogs and 35 cats) due to severe overcrowding, medical issues, or behavioral needs.
🔹 Live Release Rate: Our overall live release rate for May stood at 63%.

While every dog at the shelter is special, it breaks our hearts when the truly wonderful ones get overlooked month after month. Today, we want to introduce you to our three longest residents. All three of these amazing pups have spent over 100 days waiting in their kennels for someone to choose them.

⚡ SPEEDY – The Ultimate Goofball
🐾 Shepherd Mix, ~40 lbs (Neutered Male)
🐾 Personality: True to his name, Speedy is pure joy! He is a goofy, happy-go-lucky guy who instantly gets along with everyone he meets. If you're looking for a medium-sized partner in crime who will always keep a smile on your face, Speedy is your man.

🥜 BRUNO – The Gentle Giant
🐾 Shepherd Mix, ~60 lbs (Neutered Male)
🐾 Personality: Bruno is a big boy with an even bigger heart. He has absolute "gentle giant" energy and impeccable manners. His absolute favorite things in life are playing outside with his doggie friends and enjoying a good peanut butter treat. He’s the perfect blend of play partner and couch potato.

🌸 TULIP – The Sweetest Survivor
🐾 Hound Mix, ~40 lbs (Female)
🐾 Personality: Tulip came to us as part of a cruelty case, but she hasn't let her past dull her shine. She is the absolute sweetest little girl you will ever meet. She absolutely thrives around other dogs and is a total rockstar in our shelter playgroups. Tulip deserves a peaceful, loving home where she can finally be pampered.

100 days in a shelter is 100 days too long. Speedy and Bruno are fully vetted and ready to leave with you right now, and Tulip can head home just as soon as her spay surgery is completed right after her adoption is finalized!

✨ UPDATE: LADY HAS BEEN ADOPTED! ✨
The wait is officially over! Lady’s perfect match saw her story and came to get her. She is officially out of her kennel and spending her golden years surrounded by the love she always deserved. Thank you all for sharing her story! 😭🎉

Oh, this breaks our hearts, and we need your help to fix it. 💔

Lady thought her wait was finally over. She had visitors who fell in love with her, looked us in the eye, and promised they would be back the very next day to take her home. We were so thrilled for her that we rushed to get her spayed, packed up her things, and got her 100% ready to start her new life—but they never showed up. We don't know what happened or why plans changed, but seeing her sit by her kennel door waiting for a family that wasn't coming was absolutely devastating.

Lady has been let down before, but she is resilient, and we refuse to let a broken promise break her beautiful spirit. She is officially ready to leave with her real forever family today.

Lady has been with us for several months now. She originally arrived back in February as a sad, malnourished little sweetheart who looked like she’d been through far too much. But with steady meals, love, and simple daily care, she has blossomed into the soft, sweet, content girl she was always meant to be.

Here is what you need to know about this wonderful senior:
🦷 The Cutest Smile: She’s got a beautiful, toothless grin and the kindest heart.
🐕 The Perfect Companion: Lady is incredible with insecure and nervous dogs. She has a calming, steady presence that helps them feel safe and confident, acting as a gentle teacher to show worried pups how to shine.
🏡 Low-Maintenance & Loving: Lady doesn’t ask for much. She just wants a soft place to lay, a person to love her, and a quiet, comfortable life filled with peace and kindness.
🥣 A Quick Eater: Because she was so underweight when she arrived, she still tends to inhale her food. We recommend a slow feeder bowl to help her eat safely.

Beyond that, she just exists… and somehow makes the world a little better by doing it. Lady has earned the right to cherish her golden years in a real home. Let's make sure her next visitor is the one who stays.
