Update: Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to help Bones. He is doing great. Digestive issues are much better, neurological issues have imporved greatly and he has started on medication for the heart worm treatment. Bones is happy and responding well to his new environment. He is a very sweet dog and we sincerely thank you for helping give Bones a chance.
Bones is hoping for a chance at life. Bones was reported wandering in the same area fields for 5 days and suspected to be blind. With the help of Precious Paws in Montgomery City, we were able to trap him on March 24. We named him Bones because his stool was full of bones. Our visual assessment was that Bones was not in good health and had not been well taken care of. He was wearing a horse halter that was wired to make some sort of harness. He was extremely thin. clearly has vision issues, vomiting and couldn't keep food down. As we suspected after a vet visit, Bones is undernourished, full of worms, constipated with bones, heart worm positive and blind from either head trauma or illness. He is only 4-5 years old and weighs about 35 pounds. You can imagine that a blind dog would be petrified of strangers, but Bones has never even growled at us. Today he even wagged his tail.
He was treated for the constipation to help whatever he has been surviving on to pass through. Sorry to be graphic, but today his stool consisted of hair. Bones was also treated for worms so he seems to be feeling a little better.
NOW, here is where my job sucks. Where do we go from here? Heartworm treatment is roughly $1000 and not sure if there is anything that can be done for the blindness. Can we raise the money for medical expenses, can we find him adoption in a loving home, or are we faced with tragic option to put him down?
In my 13 years of rescue, I've only had to make the horrible decision to euthanize two times and both times were for severe aggression. I desperately want to give Bones a chance to know what love is and have the loving home every dog deserves, but financial times are rough right now and I can't put the rescue and all the other animals in danger. I'm sharing his story and asking for anyone who can help with medical expenses or may want to give Bones a chance at a good life in their home to let me know. Time is short, we need to start making decisions by Wednesday March 30.
UPDATE: We are grateful for the response and efforts to help Bones. I've started a fundraiser on my personal page, Ellen Pratt Sellers or donations can be made using the donate button on our web site happyheartsanimalrescue.com. THANK YOU to everyone that has donated so far.
Bones is on meds for bowel and digestion issues and that is improving. We have a wonderful donor who has offered to pay for his heart worm treatment. Please do not stop donating because we still have blood tests, eye exams, possible CT scans and misc vet bills to cover. We also need a foster home. If you would like to foster Bones for approximately 6 months while he goes through heartworm treatment, let me know.
