Despite what you may have heard, food allergies in dogs are not that common. According to the Whole Dog Journal, only 1% to 2% of dogs have true allergic reactions to certain foods.

For those few dogs that do have a true food allergy, the most common source of hypersensitive reactions is some sort of protein, with beef being the most common, followed by dairy products, chicken, and wheat gluten.

Allergic reactions to foods or proteins can appear when a dog's immune system overreacts to something he ate and produces antibodies. Keep in mind that somewhere between 70% to 80% of your dog's immune system is based in the gut.

If your pup has constant itchiness around the face, ears, feet, tummy, and/or the rear end -and you're sure it isn’t related to seasonal or environmental changes- it is a good indicator of a possible food allergy.

Another sign of possible food hypersensitivity is gastrointestinal upset. Think, vomiting and diarrhea, defecating more than three times daily, softer than normal stool, rumbly tummy, and flatulence.

The best way to diagnose food allergies, according to the Whole Dog Journal, is a diet elimination trial. Feed your dog a single protein/single carb diet for 8 to 12 weeks (preferably using a novel protein) and see if the symptoms go away.

If, after the 8 to 12 weeks of the elimination diet, the symptoms disappear, add a different, single ingredient back into the diet for a couple of weeks and watch closely to see if any symptoms come back. If they do, add that ingredient to the list of foods your dog should not eat. Keep trying new, single ingredients for 2-week periods until you find foods that won’t trigger symptoms.
