With the Great NEA 5k rescue Run being held on Saturday, Oct 4th, we thought it was important to bring attention to pointers on Walking or Running with your dog.

SOME REALLY GOOD ADVICE HERE from Dogs Disclosed. Dog walkers who are constantly glued to their phones, yacking obliviously to their mates or otherwise totally removed from what their dogs are doing, or what hazards might lie ahead for them, or even just the need to show better consideration to other passing dogs or people are just too common these days.

Yesterday, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Uber Technologies Inc. for discriminating against passengers with disabilities, including those who use service animals and mobility devices such as stowable wheelchairs. Uber is the largest provider of ride-hailing services in the United States. The lawsuit seeks $125 million for individuals who have been subject to discrimination and previously submitted complaints to Uber or the Department.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges Uber violated Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination based on disability by private transportation companies like Uber. The ADA also requires Uber to allow service animals to accompany individuals with disabilities in vehicles and to provide rides to, and assist, riders with stowable wheelchairs and mobility devices.

The Department’s civil complaint alleges that Uber and its drivers routinely refuse to serve individuals with disabilities; impose impermissible surcharges by charging cleaning fees for service animal shedding and cancellation fees to riders whom Uber has unlawfully denied service; and refuse to reasonably modify Uber’s policies, practices, or procedures, where necessary, to avoid discriminating against riders with disabilities, including by denying individuals with mobility disabilities the option to sit in the front seat when needed. Due to Uber’s ride denials, individuals with disabilities have experienced significant delays, missed appointments, and have been left stranded in inclement weather.

Recently NAFA Rescue was contacted by a large retail store about a dog bite by an alleged Service Animal. We gave advice to contact law enforcement, animal control and the local health department; document the incident and ask law enforcement/animal control to check to be sure the "service dog" was current on rabies vaccination (as per Arkansas State Law). We also provided them with ADA rules and regulations for service animals. We thought it was important enough that everyone (especially business owners) need to know the information about Service Animals, Emotional Support Animals and Therapy Animals.

Our Story

Northeast Arkansans for Animals (NAFA) is a non-profit, tax-deductible rescue organization for animals. We are concerned about the welfare of animals. NAFA has no paid employees, instead a dedicated group of volunteers works to fulfill our Mission Statement:

NAFA Mission Statement – since the first puppy mill rescue of 161 dogs in 1992, our mission has remained the same … to promote the humane treatment of animals and the people who loved them in Northeast Arkansas and surrounding communities through, rescue, abuse investigation, advocacy, education, disaster training and response, as well as low cost services. NAFA strives to elevate animals in our society, enhancing connections and transforming the bond between animals, people and our communities, instilling respect for all living things.

NAFA has no “shelter”. Instead we work to keep pets in their loving homes and prevent the birth of unwanted dogs and cats through vaccination clinics, cat neuters, fun events, training events, and education events. If you would like to volunteer, please email [email protected].
