The Leptospirosis vaccine is recommended for dogs in our area because the disease causes severe, life-threatening illness and is contagious from dogs to people.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Canine Vaccination Guidelines now categorize leptospirosis as a core vaccine for all dogs starting at 12 weeks old, regardless of their lifestyle, location, or breed. Any dog can be susceptible to leptospirosis, including those in urban areas. Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal disease that can also spread to humans.

As always, we recommend working closely with your pet’s veterinarian to discuss what is best for you and your dog.

Popular Fall Plant: Mums (Chrysanthemum spp.). Mums are by far the most popular flower we see during the fall, but they are considered toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. If ingested, symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, and incoordination. In cases of skin contact, dermatitis may occur.

Acorns contain a toxic principle called gallotannin. In cows and horses who repeatedly ingest significant amounts, we have seen severe gastrointestinal irritation, depression and kidney damage. Dogs, however, generally do not forage on acorns as livestock do β€” and even if they do ingest several acorns, it is usually an acute (single) exposure, not a chronic situation. In these cases, we typically only see mild to moderate gastrointestinal upset, which can include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. However, there is also the potential for mechanical irritation (from the sharp fragmented pieces of acorn), and possible obstruction, should a large amount of acorn material become lodged in the GI tract.

Blue-green algae is a toxin-producing cyanobacteria that can be found in lakes, ponds and rivers. Exposure to toxins produced by these bacteria can be life-threatening to dogs, humans and other animals. There is no antidote for blue-green algae poisoning, and it can rapidly become fatal. Preventing exposure is the most effective way to avoid this deadly toxin.

Do you know what to do if your dog gets skunked?

Skunks are notorious for their defense mechanism β€” a spray with an unmistakably pungent odor. Pet owners seldom witness their pets being sprayed by a skunk, but the smell is uniquely unpleasant.

Depending where on their body a dog gets sprayed, being skunked can generally be handled at home by decontaminating your dog with a special bathing formula. However, in some scenarios, a veterinary exam may be necessary.

Getting sprayed in the face can often cause eye irritation or damage. Dogs with multiple skunk spray exposures or a severe reaction to skunk spray could also develop dangerous anemia.
