One of the biggest reasons we can struggle when working on a dog’s behaviour is because of where we are trying to make the change.

We often ask dogs to “do better” in the exact environments they already find overwhelming.

Think about it:

A dog that explodes on walks is expected to suddenly stay calm on the same busy street, at the same time of day, with the same triggers.

A dog that struggles with visitors is expected to make better choices while strangers enter the home, talk loudly, move unpredictably, and reach toward them.

A dog that can’t focus around other dogs is taken straight back to the park and asked to “listen” when they’re already over threshold.

From the dog’s point of view, nothing has changed, except the possible extra pressures of more expectations.

Learning doesn’t happen when a nervous system is flooded. When a dog is already stressed, excited, fearful, or overwhelmed, their brain isn’t in a state where it can absorb new skills.

Expecting change in those moments often leads to frustration on both sides and labels like “stubborn” or " stupid" are thrown in the ring.

But here’s the truth:
If we want our dogs to change, we have to be open to change too.

That could look like:

Changing our routines.

Choosing quieter routes, different times of day, or more distance from triggers.

Practising skills in easier, calmer environments before asking for them in harder ones.

Letting go of the idea that progress should look the same as other dogs’ progress.

Adjusting expectations so success is realistic, not idealistic.

Behaviour change isn’t about forcing a dog to cope, it’s about setting them up to succeed.

When we adapt, so do our dogs. Confidence grows. Trust builds. And the behaviours we want to see have a chance to emerge.

Change doesn’t start with the dog.
It starts with us being willing to do things differently.

I see it in the comments all the time: “This method doesn’t work on my dog.” Okay, let’s get real. The method does work. The problem isn’t the dog, it’s skipping the actual work. Training isn’t magic, it’s practice, consistency, and patience. You don’t just sprinkle a little technique on your dog and suddenly they’re perfect.

Most of the time people skip the quiet practice, throw their dog into situations way too hard, or don’t give enough reps for the behavior to actually stick. Then they get frustrated, switch to another method, and wonder why nothing works. Newsflash: consistency beats clever tricks every single time. Your dog isn’t failing you, you’re failing your dog by skipping steps.

So if you really want results, slow down, practice in easy environments, repeat until it sticks, and stick to one method long enough to see it through. Stop hopping around looking for a miracle. The method works. You just need to work it and take it slower.

Agility with shelter pups! This type of training is not only a fun way to relieve dogs of their kennel stress, but also helps build their confidence to get them ready for their forever home. The best way to avoid " problem behaviors" is to make sure your dogs' needs are taken care of. Training will only do so much if their needs aren't met also. THANK YOU TO OUR LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS FOR DONATING THIS COURSE TO The Bridge Home No Kill Animal Rescue 🩵🐾

Skye on her first socialization field trip session! So proud of this girl! She practiced leash manners in an exciting environment - even after a passerby told my client “you cant train a dog in a harness” 🙄, walking by treats and not stealing them, and here she is sitting pretty while her Momma purchased her some goodies! 🐶🩵
(She did lay down on her own for a moment - of course she got up the moment I tried to snap a picture. As dogs always do!)
