There are three types of breeders: puppy mills, backyard breeders, and reputable breeders. Knowing how they differ from one another is important. 🐕🐾
🔷Puppy mills: Puppy mills are facilities that breed dogs for profit. The health, personality, and standard of the breed is not a priority. Often there are too many dogs for the space, many different breeds rather than a focus on one, and many litters every year to provide a constant churn of available puppies. Puppy mills conduct minimal, if any, medical screenings on their dogs, breed them frequently, and often breed them younger than recommended.
🔷Backyard Breeders (BYB): Backyard Breeders breed dogs without attention to the health or personalities of the dogs. They may be breeding for fun, to have the puppy experience, or for profit. This may involve breeding different purebred dogs to produce a trendy mutt or unplanned litters resulting from unaltered dogs. Backyard breeders conduct minimal, if any, medical screenings on their dogs, may breed them frequently, and often breed them younger than recommended.
🔷Reputable Breeders: Reputable breeders have dedicated themselves to a particular breed of dog, have spent time learning about the breed, working with it, living with it, and are active in organizations that show or compete with the dogs to best see the dog’s personality while engaging in the activities for which it was bred.
This is Part 3 of a series on breeders. We will focus on reputable breeders in our next installment. The American Kennel Club and Prima Doberman Pinschers were sources of information for this series.
