Carbon County Friends of Animals We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1997 to provide a safe haven for unwanted cats.

Our mission is to offer shelter, care, and compassion to cats who have been abandoned, neglected, or mistreated, giving them a second chance at finding loving homes.

Some kittens arrive at the shelter needing a little extra help. Knox arrived needing so much more. ❤️🐾

Knox is only 5 months old.

He was found abandoned with his siblings and brought to Carbon County Friends of Animals. From the beginning, it was clear that this little fellow had already been dealt a very difficult hand.

Knox was born with severely deformed eyes and could barely make out shadows.

After veterinary evaluation, the decision was made to remove both of his eyes.

Now he is back at CCFOA, recovering from surgery beneath the careful watch of the shelter staff.

And everyone has fallen in love with him.

There is something about seeing such a small kitten go through so much that makes you want to protect him from every hard thing that might ever come next.

So for now, that is exactly what everyone at the shelter is doing.

Keeping him comfortable.
Keeping him safe.
Making sure he eats.
Making sure he heals.

And making sure he knows that, after being abandoned, he is no longer alone.

Knox is not ready for adoption yet. Right now, his only job is to recover and grow stronger.

When the time comes that he is ready for a forever home, we will make that announcement right here on Facebook.

Until then, Knox is one of the many reasons your donations to CCFOA matter.

Your support helps pay for surgeries, medications, veterinary care, food, recovery supplies, and all the little things that add up when a kitten needs a second chance.

Sometimes rescue means finding a cat a home.

Sometimes it means giving a frightened kitten a warm bed.

And sometimes it means standing beside a five-month-old baby after surgery and making sure the next chapter of his life is kinder than the first.

Have you ever witnessed a Miracle? ❤️🐾

Here at Carbon County Friends of Animals, we witness little miracles every day.

Sometimes, though, we get one of the big ones.

And this beautiful girl earned the name Miracle.

Miracle came to us with a badly injured front leg. We don’t know exactly what happened. She may have been attacked by another animal. She may have been struck by a car.

What we do know is that she needed help.

After surgeries, a tremendous amount of care, and a long period of recovery, Miracle made it through.

And now she is finally ready for the part of her story we have all been waiting for:

Her forever home. 🏡❤️

Miracle is an adult female who is sweet, loving, and absolutely beautiful. After everything she has been through, she deserves a quiet, comfortable life with someone who will keep her safe, spoil her a little, and remind her every day that she is loved.

She has already done the hard part.

She survived.

Now she is waiting for someone to give her the happy ending.

From TNR kitten to certified cool cat. 😎🐾

Meet Chip, formerly known as Silk in his foster home.

Chip is a 14-week-old male kitten who came to us through TNR. That little tipped ear tells part of his story.

When Chip was first trapped, he was still a little unsure about people. Semi-feral, cautious, and figuring out whether humans could be trusted.

Well...

He figured it out. ❤️

Chip has blossomed into a social, playful, affectionate little guy who loves attention, cat toys, and especially the company of other cats.

He is proof that sometimes a frightened kitten just needs time, patience, and a safe place to learn that people can be pretty wonderful.

And now?

Chip is officially available for adoption.

He would be a fantastic choice for a home with another friendly cat, or for someone looking for an outgoing kitten who wants to be part of the action.

That tipped ear isn’t something to overlook.

It’s a little badge that says:

This kitten got a second chance.

Now he just needs someone to give him the forever part. 🏡❤️

🧺🐾 SHELTER NEED: WORKING WASHING MACHINES 🐾🧺

Here is something you might not immediately think of when you picture a cat shelter:

Laundry. Lots and lots and LOTS of laundry. 😅

Every single day, our washing machines are hard at work cleaning towels, blankets, washcloths, bedding, and everything else we use to keep the cats at Carbon County Friends of Animals clean, comfortable, and healthy.

And when we say they work hard, we mean it.

Shelter washing machines don't get the occasional weekend load. They run constantly, and eventually, even the toughest machines wear out.

Right now, we need working washing machines.

Maybe you recently upgraded and still have your old washer sitting in the basement or garage.

Maybe you're remodeling.

Maybe you have a perfectly good machine taking up space and you've been wondering what to do with it.

We would love to put it to work. ❤️

A donated washing machine might not seem as exciting as a bag of kitten toys or treats, but here at the shelter, it is an incredibly important piece of equipment.

Clean laundry means clean beds.
Clean blankets.
Clean towels.

And healthier, more comfortable cats. 🐱💕

Not ready to give up being a helicopter parent? 🚁🐱

Your children are growing up.

They’re becoming independent.

They’re leaving the nest.

And people keep telling you that eventually you’re going to have to stop checking whether they ate, slept, dressed appropriately, remembered their appointments, made good decisions, and survived the approximately 147 dangers you identified before breakfast.

Absolutely not.

Have you considered fostering kittens?

Cat shelters and rescues are often desperately in need of foster homes, especially during kitten season, and former—or current—helicopter parents may already possess an impressive set of qualifications.

You can sense danger before it exists.

You notice when someone hasn't eaten enough.

You can identify a suspicious cough from three rooms away.

You know when somebody is way too quiet.

You have spent years asking questions such as, "Did you p**p today?"

You can function on very little sleep.

And you are fully prepared to stare at another living creature for an unreasonable amount of time simply to make sure they're breathing normally.

These are foster-parent skills.

Instead of retiring your finely tuned surveillance system when your children leave home, consider putting it to work for tiny kittens who genuinely do require someone watching their every move.

Fostering can give kittens a safe place to grow, recover, socialize, and prepare for adoption while helping shelters make room for the next cats who need them.

So when your child says, "Mom, you don't have to worry about me anymore," don't despair.

There is probably a kitten somewhere about to climb something it absolutely should not be climbing.

Your work here is not finished. 😂🐾

Contact your local cat shelter or rescue and ask about becoming a foster parent.

Your children may have escaped the helicopter.

When we put out the urgent request for chicken baby food, we hoped a few people might be able to help.

Our community responded in a BIG way.

Just look at all of this. 🥹

Because of your generosity, our tiny kittens and sick kittens now have a wonderful supply of the chicken baby food they sometimes need to help them eat, regain strength, and keep growing.

One jar became two. Two became a bag. A few bags became a whole table full of help for the little lives in our care.

That little motor running inside your cat? Scientists still haven’t completely figured it out. 🐱❤️

We all know the sound.

Your cat curls up beside you, closes those eyes, and suddenly the room fills with that wonderful little purrrrrrrrrr.

Most of us assume it means one thing:

I’m happy.

But a cat’s purr is much more mysterious than that.

Cats certainly purr when they are comfortable and content. But they have also been observed purring when they are frightened, stressed, injured, or otherwise uncomfortable. In other words, a purr may sometimes be a way of soothing themselves, much like humans might hum, laugh nervously, or seek comfort when we’re upset.

And scientists are still learning how cats actually make that sound.

For years, the leading explanation involved rapid contractions of muscles in the larynx. More recent research has found that special pads of connective tissue in a cat’s vocal folds can produce those extraordinarily low purring frequencies as air moves through the larynx, even without muscular contractions.

The full mechanism in a living, purring cat is still being investigated.

Then there is another fascinating mystery.

Cats may have learned how to modify their purr specifically to get our attention.

Researchers discovered a type of “solicitation purr” used by some cats when they want something, particularly food. Hidden within the normal low purr is a higher-frequency sound with qualities similar to a cry. When people listened to recordings, they tended to rate those purrs as more urgent than ordinary purring.

In other words, your cat may have discovered exactly which button to push. 😹

There is even a hypothesis that purring could have physical benefits for cats themselves. Feline purrs contain low-frequency vibrations, including frequencies that overlap with ranges studied for effects on bone and tissue. Researchers have proposed that this could potentially help cats maintain their bodies while spending so much of their lives resting, although the idea that cats literally “heal themselves” by purring remains a hypothesis, not a proven superpower.

So the next time your cat climbs onto your lap and starts that tiny motor, enjoy it.

Maybe your cat is happy.
Maybe your cat is comforting itself.
Maybe your cat wants dinner.

Maybe there is something else going on that we still don’t understand.

After thousands of years of living beside us, cats are still keeping a few secrets. ❤️🐾

And we wouldn’t expect anything less.
