Well done. 👍🏻 You have the heart of an angel. 🥹
"You can take the female, but we have to send the male to another rescue in two hours."
My stomach dropped. The shelter was at max capacity. It was 4:00 PM on a Friday. They needed the kennel space.
These two red-nose pitties had been dumped in a cardboard box by the highway. They had survived the cold, the hunger, and the fear—together. And now, because of overcrowding, the system was about to rip them apart.
I looked at them through the gate. The brother (we call him Barnaby) was trembling, shaking so hard his teeth chattered. The sister (Bessie) was standing over him, barking at anyone who got too close, trying to be big and brave for her little brother.
She was protecting him. She was all he had.
"If you take the girl," the officer said, reaching for the leash, "we can get him on the transport van."
I watched Bessie panic as the officer opened the door. She didn't run for the exit. She scrambled backward, covering her brother's body with her own.
That was it. That was the moment.
"Put the leash away," I said, my voice shaking a little. "We're not taking the girl."
The officer looked confused. "You changed your mind?"
"No," I said, grabbing my car keys. "I mean we're not taking just the girl. We're taking the boy, too. Pack their stuff. They're coming with me."
My landlord is going to kill me. My bank account is going to hate me. But looking at them now, asleep in a tangled pile of paws and snores on my back seat... I know I made the right call.
Family stays together. Period.
