It is an incredibly profound moment to witness a client connect with the strength, beauty and confidence they find in a horse and discover that they too have the same qualities 💕

You may wonder, why horses for mental health and not other animals?

Horses have been found to act similarly to humans in their social and responsive behavior. It’s easy for people to connect with the horse as they reflect many aspects of ourselves.

Just being near horses or stroking them can reduce stress and anxiety levels and increase a sense of wellbeing. It doesn’t involve humans trying to imitate the way horses interact with one another. It’s a symbiotic and dynamic process that recognizes horses as sensitive, decision-making beings.

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′healing′′ that occurs when we're close to horses.
According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the human heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters (approx. 6 to 9 feet) around the human body.
While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive is the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse which is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can feel better when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace.
In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy.

Some people find it difficult to articulate their feelings verbally, especially children. However, many children find it easier to identify and express feelings when in the presence of horses. Horses hold space in a safe way that can help clients release feelings that have been stuck or unacknowledged.

The true beauty lies in the emotional bond formed. Horses have the ability to communicate nonverbally, responding to a child's energy and emotions. This interaction not only boosts self-awareness but also helps kids build trust and confidence.

For children facing challenges, these benefits can be life-changing. From boosting self-esteem to fostering empathy, therapy involving horses opens doors to new possibilities.

With the support of mental health professionals and equine facilitators, personal feelings, beliefs and narratives come to light so healing and change can begin.

What is Equine Assisted Learning?

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a unique approach to experiential learning, where clients are offered safe experiences with horses for the purpose of learning social-emotional skills, personal development, and professional development skills (e.g. leadership and team building). EAL is a fast-growing modality across Australia and the globe. Many clients benefit greatly from EAL services, including children, adolescents and adults.

Amazing women resting and restoring with our herd✨️💖
Equine therapy reduces anxiety and depression through physiological changes. Studies show that animal-assisted therapy reduces cortisol, the stress hormone. In addition, spending time with animals lowers blood pressure. It also increases the release of oxytocin, a natural chemical that promotes feelings of positivity and connection💕
