✨ We want to take a moment to talk about a very *divisive* topic and that is the use of tools in dog training. ✨

🙋‍♀️ What do we mean by tools? Tools are anything you use to communicate with your dog. This could be treats, or a clicker, a prong collar, a harness, or in the case we’re about to talk about, an electronic collar.

📚 The reason we want to take a moment to speak on this is because there is so much misinformation, disinformation, and vilification of tools in day to day life and online. Certain veterinary clinics even require you to remove any “tools” they deem inappropriate, like prong or e collars, before you can enter their clinic. That’s a little crazy, especially considering treats are not typically included in these banned tools despite there being a growing obesity epidemic in pet dogs…interesting. According to the American Kennel Club 56% of American pet dogs are overweight, just some food for thought.

🐶 Now, let’s talk about how we used the electronic collar for Johnny the Hound. When Johnny first started coming for daycare he was a serial humper. If he got overwhelmed in play, or even overwhelmed by other dogs playing around him, he would latch on and try to drive the dog he was hu***ng into the ground and not let go of them or let them up, incredibly inappropriate and dangerous behavior, especially in a daycare setting. 😍 Have you ever heard of a Karelian Bear Dog?! We hadn’t either until Togo came along! Togo is the most fun, goofy, cuddly, and floofiest dogs we’ve ever met! Karelian Bear Dogs are bred for big game hunting and are silent hunters until they’ve stopped or treed their kill, when only then they will start to bark to mark their kill. Togo is definitely a fan of using his voice here, but otherwise is one of the most neutral and fun boys we’ve ever met! We love learning about and meeting new breeds at Mansfield Kennels! 😍
