 Before purchasing an axolotl, take a close look at the conditions they’re being kept in.

One major red flag is axolotls housed on gravel or small rocks. Axolotls are suction feeders and frequently swallow substrate while eating. When gravel is ingested, it can become lodged in the digestive tract, causing impaction, internal injury, loss of appetite, infection, and in some cases, death.

Veterinarians regularly perform surgeries to remove swallowed gravel from axolotls which is an entirely preventable problem with proper husbandry.

Safe alternatives include:
Bare-bottom tanks
Fine sand (for appropriately sized axolotls)
Large river rocks too big to swallow

As consumers, we vote with our wallets. Supporting breeders and sellers who follow proper care standards helps improve animal welfare and encourages responsible husbandry throughout the hobby.

Please do your research before purchasing an axolotl. Healthy animals start with proper care.

In a victory for conservation in Mexico City on April 6, 2026, biologists documented a rare melanoid (all-black) Axolotlusing its sturdy limbs to "walk" across the bed of a newly cleaned chinampa canal. While axolotls are primarily aquatic, this individual was filmed navigating a shallow, sediment-rich transition zone with surprising agility. The sighting is being hailed as proof that the "Refugia" project—which creates predator-free zones for these critically endangered "water monsters"—is successfully restoring the natural behavior and habitat of the species in the heart of the Xochimilco wetlands.
