As a breeder the hard part isn’t when they head to their forever homes, it’s when you can’t save the tiny little fighter. I have been trying to process this loss and find the words to update those following along with Biscuit’s journey. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, he has crossed the rainbow bridge! He is at peace now and is no longer suffering through the physical deficits he was facing! My heart is broken as he genuinely was my baby!!
May Biscuit be a remind to everyone that breeding experience is important!! Make sure you are working with a knowledgeable breeder with a good established program. The struggles Biscuit faced could and should have been avoided!! We understand that some may need or want to go with the cheaper program. But please remember, cheap does not mean healthy. A reputable breeder has a CONSTANT investment, putting back into our programs to ensure healthy puppies!! The health tests, VET costs, food, vaccines, laundry the endless laundry, heartache of loosing a mom or baby, endless nights with momma & babies, no family vacations bc someone always has to be around for the dogs! Our list of responsibilities goes on and on! It’s a labor of love for Dachshunds breed and responsibly breeding isn’t for the faint of heart. I know personally I’d rather spend more on a puppy that I knew was healthy, rather than the cheaper puppy with the uncertainty of lifelong and/or chronic health issues. Do your research!
P.S. - Biscuit did not come from one of my litters! Biscuit was the grandson of one of my retired females . We were called to step in and assist at 3 weeks of age. Had we (or a vet) been contacted earlier, he may of had a different outcome.
