Many of y'all know Lee Weatherford that takes people out at Rustic Sky Horse Camp. Lee is such a hoot and he is one heck of a horse trainer and top notch trail guide. He always has several horses in training and he rides the hair off of them. They quietly go to a new owner when he is ready to move them on. He just posted this about what makes a good trail horse and he is spot on. This doesn't happen overnight - it takes many rides and the right temperament and Lee seems to be able to spot great horseflesh when he sees it. With Lee's permission, here is his thoughts on a great trail horse.

A Good Horse! Everyone’s definition is different!

1. He’s easy to catch.
2. He leads behind me.
3. When I tie him he doesn’t sit back.
4. Stands dead still to curry.
5. He stands dead still while throw pad and saddle on him.
6. Not cinchy, when I tighten girth.
7. No pawing.
8. Loads easy in trailer.
9. Stands in trailer for hours, and you don’t know he’s in there.
10. When you get him out, he stands dead still while mounting and doesn’t move while you adjust your shirt, hat, etc….
11. Only walks off when you ask him.
12. Walks or moves the speed you ask when riding.
13. Stops dead still when tangled in vines until you cut him out.
14. Doesn’t ride up another horses butt while riding.
15. Doesn’t kick when other horses ride up on his butt.
16. Doesn’t buck or rear no matter what.
17. Will ride away from other horses and could care less about them.
18. If you leave him at home alone and take other horses, he doesn’t pace up and down the fence hollering until you get home.
This is a good horse starter kit! There is more. Come on

It is almost hunting season - it is right around the corner. We all want to be safe during this time so there are a few tips to keep all of us safe - and our horses! I wear my orange vest ever single ride. We generally arrive between 9:30-10:00 to saddle up. So that means we aren't even getting into the woods until about 10:30 AM. This gives the hunters plenty of time in the woods and plenty of time to be gone before we hit the woods. Kathy Owens is famous for her warning cry of "Whooooop Whooooop" and then we all follow suit yelling Whoop Whoop. That certainly lets anyone know we are in the woods! Some people put jingle bells on their horses, Prissy Hight had neon orange tack for Remi and Blondie and that is a pretty good idea. I got my orange vest years ago and it stays in my horses trailer so I never have to ride without it. Be safe, be considerate and I hope everyone has Happy Trails this fall riding in our beloved Ebenezer!!!

I rode at Ebenezer yesterday with Kathy Owens, Prissy Hight, Tammy Simon, Fran Jacobson and Mary Martin. I rented site 4 so we could have a place to hose the horses off and sit down and rest after our ride. We rode up the water line trail. Trails were dry - even a little creek crossing that is sometimes knee deep was dry. Prissy, Fran and Mary were in the lead and Mary got hit by bees. Tammy, Kathy and I turned around as we couldn't get past the bees as it was a huge swarm according to Kathy. I was in the back taking pictures of Pitcher plants so I only saw Mary's horse Spider crow hopping around. Thank God no one was hurt. We rode 6.7 miles. Fall is here and we are all ready to ride. I was supposed to go back to day but this day cold decided I needed to stay home!! The trail we made yesterday was pretty much going out and coming straight back the same way. It was a good ride - Rosita did well but she did stumble over some roots once and went to her knees. Watch out for those dang roots!! Also, they started logging right inside the spillway area - so watch for trucks!

I just left Ebenezer Park. I went to visit Barbara Intelisano and Stephanie Adair Hanslik but wasn't able to ride this time. Barbara is in site #5 and was sorry to tell me when she got there Monday the pens were full of horse p**p and old hay. She had a spend 30 minutes time and effort in the mid-day heat cleaning the pen of someone else's mess. I hope it was no one in that site that is a member here. Having that wonderful park is such a joy to so many and it takes everyone that goes there a little bit of work to keep it nice. Leave a nice clean pen for the person coming in behind you and that will be deeply appreciated!!! Leave no p**p or hay behind and keep Ebenezer a nice place to go ride our horses and camp and visit with our friends!
