Halloween Tips for Anxious Pets

Quiet Room • Secure Doors • ID Tags/Microchips • Safe Space

👻 Halloween can be a lot when you're a dog or cat.

Think about it from their perspective:

The doorbell keeps ringing.
Strangers keep appearing at the house.
Some of them are VERY small and inexplicably dressed like dinosaurs.
Everyone is making noise.
The front door keeps opening.
And your pet has absolutely no idea why.

For nervous or easily excited pets, consider setting up a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door before trick-or-treating begins.

* Keep pets safely secured when answering the door.
* Make sure identification tags and microchip information are current.
* Give anxious pets access to a familiar, quiet room.
* Use familiar background noise to help mask doorbells and outside activity.
* Be especially careful with pets who may bolt through an open door.

A little preparation can make Halloween much less stressful for everyone—including the four-legged family members who definitely did NOT agree to participate. ❤️

HAPPY NATIONAL CAT DAY!

Apparently today is National Cat Day.

We attempted to explain to the cats that this means October 29 is a special day dedicated entirely to celebrating them.

The cats informed us that this is incorrect.
Every day is Cat Day. 😼

They also requested additional treats, uninterrupted access to the warmest seat in the house and for everyone to stop closing doors to rooms they have absolutely no intention of entering.

Honestly, negotiations aren't going well.

So from Poppy and all of us at Compassion…

🐾 Happy National Cat Day to the tiny household dictators we wouldn't have any other way. ❤️

🎃 TRICK OR TREAT?

SOME TREATS ARE ALL TRICK FOR PETS!
🚫 Chocolate
🚫 Xylitol
🚫 Raisins
🚫 Candy wrappers

Keep the candy bowl out of paw's reach!

🎃 The candy bowl is for the trick-or-treaters—not the four-legged members of the family!

Halloween brings a few extra opportunities for curious noses to get into trouble.
Keep an especially close eye on:

🍫 Chocolate — particularly dark and baking chocolate.
🍬 Sugar-free candy & gum — some products contain xylitol, which can be extremely dangerous for dogs.
🍇 Raisins — potentially toxic to dogs and sometimes hiding inside baked goods or trail mixes.
🍭 Wrappers & candy bags — sometimes our pets don't bother removing the packaging before helping themselves!

And don't underestimate your pet's ability to find the candy you thought was safely out of reach.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn't have, don't wait for symptoms to appear before calling for guidance.

Happy Veterinary Technician Week!

💙 THREE DIFFERENT STRENGTHS. ONE INCREDIBLE TEAM.

As Veterinary Technician Week comes to an end, we couldn't wrap it up without celebrating these three together one more time.

❤️ Kaylee brings technical skill, a special touch with our anxious kitties and enough perfectly timed comedic relief to keep the rest of us going on even the craziest days.

❤️ Kat brings years of veterinary experience, an incredible amount of compassion and a special ability to make our nervous patients—especially those anxious pups—feel just a little safer.

❤️ Mikaela brings advanced anesthesia and surgical skills, versatility, strong relationships with our clients and the ability to jump in wherever the hospital needs her.

They aren't the same.
And that's exactly what makes them such a great team.

Each brings different strengths, different personalities and different talents to Compassion. Together, they help our doctors practice better medicine, help our hospital run more smoothly and—most importantly—help us provide exceptional care to the animals entrusted to us.

Another familiar, friendly face to so many of our Compassion families, Mikaela has built wonderful relationships with our clients and patients during her time with us.

Behind the scenes, though, she has another title:

Our Anesthesia & Surgery Queen. 👑🩺

Mikaela has developed exceptional skills in anesthesia, surgery and dentistry and has become someone our doctors trust heavily when caring for our surgical and hospitalized patients.

One of Mikaela's greatest strengths is her versatility. She understands how all the moving pieces of a busy veterinary hospital fit together and is always willing to step in where she's needed.

Whether she's assisting our doctors, caring for patients in treatment, helping keep the day moving, or jumping up front to support our client service team, Mikaela is someone we can count on.

Her experience, technical skill and willingness to support those around her make her an invaluable part of the Compassion team.

From anesthesia and surgery to client relationships and everything in between, Mikaela wears a LOT of hats at Compassion—and we are incredibly grateful for everything she brings to our hospital.
