🐴 ⭐️ CASE OF THE WEEK ⭐️🐴

When this horse first arrived to us, he was in extremely poor condition — weighing only around 500 lbs with a body condition score of 2/9, covered in lice, and dealing with a painful leg wound. Cases like this are heartbreaking, but they also remind us how important proper rehabilitation and refeeding programs are in neglected horses.

One of the biggest dangers in severely underweight horses is refeeding syndrome. If calories and grain are introduced too quickly, it can cause serious — even life-threatening — metabolic complications. That’s why these cases require patience, careful monitoring, and a gradual nutrition plan.

Over the past month, this horse has been on:
🐴 Free choice hay
🐴 Gradual introduction of grower feed
🐴 Alfalfa cubes
🐴 A ration balancer
🐴 Controlled grazing time

Along with treating the lice infestation and continuing wound care on the leg, he has already improved to a body condition score of 4/9! His coat is improving, the lice are gone, and while his leg still has healing left to do, he is feeling much brighter and stronger every day.

Recovery like this does not happen overnight. It takes time, consistency, nutrition, parasite control, medical care, and a dedicated team. We are proud of how far this guy has come in just one month, and we can’t wait to continue watching his progress. 💙

🎥 Tuesday Talks… on a Wednesday 😅 Whoops!

This week we’re talking about MICROCHIPS 💃🏻

A microchip is one of the simplest and most important things you can do to help your pet make it home safely if they ever get lost. Collars and tags can fall off — but a microchip stays with them for life. ❤️

Did you know pets with microchips are significantly more likely to be reunited with their families? It’s quick, safe, and gives so much peace of mind.

✨ AND this month only, microchipping is 20% OFF! ✨

If your pet isn’t chipped yet, now is the perfect time to get it done. Give us a call to schedule! 🐶🐱

Happy update — all FOUR of our foster kittens have officially been adopted into their forever homes! 🐾❤️

We are so thankful to everyone who shared their photos, asked about them, and helped these babies find loving families. Watching them go from tiny fosters to spoiled house kittens is one of the best parts of what we do. 🥰

Don’t worry though… kitten season is still in full swing, and we’ll be posting again as soon as our next foster babies make their way into the clinic and are ready to meet everyone!

Thank you for supporting foster pets, adoption, and our local rescue efforts. 🐱✨

🐶🐾 Case of the Week 🐾 🐶

This week we treated a painful indolent corneal ulcer in one of our canine patients. 👁️

This sweet pup came to see us after about 3–4 days of redness, squinting, and eye discomfort. Eye issues can progress quickly, so even mild squinting is something we always recommend having checked sooner rather than later.

After performing a fluorescein eye stain, we diagnosed an indolent ulcer — a type of corneal ulcer where the surface of the eye struggles to properly heal on its own.

Treatment involved:
🔹 Debriding the loose, unhealthy corneal tissue to encourage healing
🔹 Placing a protective contact lens over the eye
🔹 Sending home medications including:
• Neopolybac ointment
• Atropine drops for pain/spasm relief
• The patient’s own serum eye drops to help promote healing

These ulcers can be extremely uncomfortable, but with proper treatment and close monitoring, many heal very well. Early intervention is key when it comes to eye problems!

👀 Signs your pet may need an eye exam:
• Squinting
• Redness
• Excessive tearing
• Pawing at the eye
• Cloudiness or discharge

There’s just something special about moments like this. ❤️

Yesterday morning we assisted with pulling this big calf from a first-time heifer — not an easy start for either of them, but seeing this little one up, safe, and getting a bottle makes it all worth it.

From the long hours to the tough pulls, this is the part of the job that reminds us why we do what we do. The reward isn’t just a successful outcome — it’s getting to be a small part of moments like this between people and their animals.

Huge thanks to our client for sharing this sweet photo with us!

We want to extend a huge thank you to our local Ag Office, Dr. Ivey with UT, and the generous owner who donated their horse for a recent necropsy.

While this can be a difficult decision, it provided an incredibly valuable hands-on learning opportunity for our Horse 4-H club, FFA, farrier, and others in attendance. Experiences like this help deepen understanding of equine anatomy, health, and disease in a way that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom.

We’re grateful for the collaboration and willingness to support education in our community—these moments truly make a lasting impact.

Thank you again to everyone involved!

🐄 Case of the Week: Bovine C-Section 🐮

We were recently called out for a cow that had been in labor… but something just wasn’t progressing.

❓ At what point do you step in and ask for help?
❓ What could be preventing a calf from being delivered normally?

On exam, we discovered a uterine torsion—a twisting of the uterus that makes natural delivery nearly impossible. To make things even more challenging, this calf was BIG… weighing in at around 100 lbs.

❓ Can a calf this size be delivered naturally?

At this point, we had to make a quick call… and proceeded with a C-section.

Here’s where cows are a little different than your typical surgical patient:
👉 Most cow C-sections are done with the cow standing, using local anesthesia instead of putting them fully under
👉 The incision is typically made on the left side to safely access the uterus
👉 It often happens right on the farm, not in a surgical suite

❓ Why do you think we avoid general anesthesia in cows when possible?

Despite the severity of the torsion and the calf’s size, our doctors worked together to do everything they could. Unfortunately, the calf was not able to be saved—but we were able to save the cow, which is always our top priority in cases like this.

❓ Did you know uterine torsions can be life-threatening if not treated quickly?

Drop your thoughts, guesses, or questions below ⬇️ We love seeing how much our clients already know!

🐴 Case of the Week 🐴

We worked with a broodmare struggling to settle after breeding. Despite good timing and quality semen, she wasn’t catching. On exam, we found fluid accumulation in her uterus—something that can interfere with embryo survival.

💉 What is “Flushing”?
Uterine flushing (lavage) is the process of gently infusing sterile fluid into the uterus and then removing it. This helps clear out:
• Inflammatory debris
• Excess fluid
• Bacteria or contaminants

👶 Post-Foaling Importance:
Flushing isn’t just for breeding! After a mare foals, it can be used to:
• Help clear retained fluid or debris
• Reduce risk of uterine infection
• Support faster recovery for future breeding

⚠️ When Might a Mare Need It?
• Fluid seen on ultrasound after breeding
• History of infertility or early pregnancy loss
• Delayed uterine clearance
• Post-foaling complications

📣 Takeaway:
Sometimes it’s not about the timing or the semen—it’s about the environment. A healthy uterus is key to a healthy pregnancy!

Have questions about your mare’s reproductive health or breeding plan? We’re here to help 🐎💙

🐾 Meet Our Newest Team Member: Davey 🐾

We’d like to officially introduce everyone to Davey, our new clinic cat! 💙

Davey is a distinguished gentleman at 16–17 years young, and while he may be a little older, he’s already made himself right at home here. He came to us from Best Friends Sanctuary, and we’re so grateful to give him a safe, comfortable place to spend his golden years.

Davey has been diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease, so he’ll be getting plenty of extra love, monitoring, and care from our team. Right now, his daily routine includes lots of naps (his specialty), enjoying his favorite wet food topper, and supervising the clinic in his own quiet way.

We’re so happy to have him as part of our family, and we know he’s going to bring a lot of comfort and smiles to both our staff and clients. 🐱

If you see Davey during your visit, feel free to say hello—just don’t be surprised if he’s on break (aka sleeping)! 😴

Welcome to the good life, Davey 💕
