Isnโ€™t one night enough? Or even too much? I enjoy fireworks displays, but preventing the suffering of animals and veterans means more to me than a little pleasure does.

In order for punishment to be effective, the punishment must be significant enough that the dog will actively work to avoid it happening again. That means it has to be painful, uncomfortable, or scary enough for the dog to want to avoid a repeat. That means the dog is working out of fear of punishment, not motivation to succeed or work with a human. Even if on the other side you are reinforcing what you want the dog to do, the act of using punishment to create avoidance requires the dog to be more afraid of punishment then he is motivated by reinforcement. This means you cannot build trust with your dog. If your dog is afraid of being punished, at no time will he ever be able to fully trust you. The same is true for children, and well documented that punishment in children leads to sneaky, distrusting kids who avoid going to their caregivers for help when needed out of fear of punishment. The same goes for your dog. They cannot trust you and at the same time work to avoid being punished by you. Choose trust. Always choose trust.

Due to overwhelming demand and my original 4 classes filling up for February 2022, I have added two new basic obedience group classes to the schedule! I am so thankful for everyone's support of my small business! EDIT - ALL CLASSES ARE FULL! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The Tuesday classes start February 1st, and the Thursday classes start Feb 3rd!

Basic Obedience Class (Tuesday, 2/1 at 5:00 and 6:00 PM and Thursday, 2/3 at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 PM) is for dogs and their families who want to work on socializing around other dogs and people while learning basic obedience cues such as sit, stay, come, leave it, wait, lay down, and work on behaviors like jumping, potty/kennel training, and walking on a leash!

FULL: Advanced class (Tuesday 2/1 at 7:00 PM) is one of my favorites to teach! This class is for dogs who already know cues like sit, stay, come, and walking nicely, but need practice in real life situations! This class is customizable based on what the participants need! We tend to take field trips to a local park, pet friendly stores or restaurants!

All classes are $199 per dog and hosted at the Pet Supermarket at 1020 S Ponce De Leon Blvd in St. Augustine, FL! Only 4 dogs allowed per class and payment is required to reserve your spot!

Here's a specific question every dog owner should ask of a prospective trainer ....

If the answer is 'Yes' or 'Yes but...' or 'It depends' or 'Why do you ask' or is in any way unclear or evasive, that gives you some very clear information. These tools use discomfort, force, pressure and sometimes fear or pain to teach. It's how they work and any trainer who uses these tools should be honest with you about that so that you can make an informed choice about whether you're happy for these tools to be used on your dog.

As dog owners it's our responsibility to know, and understand, the methods used by the people we entrust our dogs to. Only then can we make informed decisions.

It is also our responsibility as pet professionals to be transparent about our ethos & methods but, unfortunately, that's not always the case.

So ask questions. Be persistent. Get informed.
