🚨 FLORIDA PET OWNERS — PLEASE READ THIS. 🚨

It’s Sago Palm season again… and every single year we see heartbreaking emergencies because many people have absolutely no idea how toxic these plants are.

The worst part?
They’re EVERYWHERE in Florida landscaping.

And unfortunately… dogs seem to think the seeds are delicious.

🌴 WHAT IS A SAGO PALM?
Sago Palm

Despite the tropical look, this plant is EXTREMELY toxic to pets — especially dogs.

The MOST dangerous part?
The seeds/nuts.

Even ONE seed can cause severe liver failure.
Yes… one.

🚨 SIGNS OF SAGO PALM TOXICITY:
Symptoms may start within hours and can rapidly become life-threatening.

Watch for:
• Vomiting
• Drooling
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Weakness
• Bloody stool
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Yellowing of the gums/eyes (jaundice)
• Collapse

⚠️ WHAT MAKES IT SO SCARY:
Sometimes pets seem “okay” at first.
Then the liver damage begins.

By the time symptoms become severe, we are often fighting for their life.

🚨 IF YOUR PET EATS ANY PART OF A SAGO PALM:
DO NOT “wait and see.”

Call your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY.
If after hours, contact an emergency veterinarian or the:
ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center

🌱 COMMON PLACES PEOPLE HAVE THEM:
• Front yard landscaping
• Apartment complexes
• HOA entrances
• Pool areas
• Decorative planters
• Neighbors’ yards

A lot of people inherit these plants with a home and never realize the danger.

🐾 WHAT YOU SHOULD DO TODAY:
• Walk your yard
• Check your neighborhood
• Look before letting your dog sniff around landscaping
• Remove accessible seeds immediately
• Consider removing the plant entirely if you have pets

And please…

Every year we meet families saying:
“I had no idea.”

We would much rather educate people now than meet your pet during an emergency later. 💔

I hate going to work.

Which is why I stopped doing it.

Somewhere along the way, the word “work” started sounding heavy. Stressful. Like something people survive instead of enjoy.

So I made a decision a long time ago that I wasn’t going to spend my life just “going to work.”

Instead, I’d spend my days doing things that felt meaningful.

Listening.
Learning.
Solving problems.
Helping people.
Helping animals.
Investing in my community.
Growing into the kind of person I actually wanted to become.

So these days, I don’t really feel like I’m driving to work.

Most mornings feel more like I’m simply showing up with a purpose.

Sometimes that purpose is comforting a scared client.
Sometimes it’s helping a sick pet.
Sometimes it’s supporting my team.
Sometimes it’s just trying to make somebody’s day a little easier than it was before they walked through the door.

I’m not saying every day is easy. Lord knows it isn’t.

However, when you stop looking at your life as “work” and start looking at it as choosing where your energy goes… everything feels a little different.

So no…
I’m not on my way to work.

Me and this little fuzzy copilot are just headed somewhere meaningful.

Liz & Fred on a Sunday = working on some kind of project 😅

And wherever we are, there’s usually a crumb cruncher or two running around…

Turns out the neighbor’s grass was getting real tall because their mower broke.
Fred and I were tied up finishing that flooring fiasco, so one of the crumb crunchers stepped in and handled it 💚

Good neighbors raise good neighbors.
(And the dogs appreciate not wading through snake grass 🐍🐾)

Clover Butterbean learned the hard way that not all sky raisins are friendly… 🌶️🐝

“Did you get bit by a spicy sky raisin in the face?” 😅

Spring is here, which means bugs are OUT—and our curious pups sometimes think everything is a snack or a toy.

What to watch for:
• Sudden swelling (especially face, lips, or eyes)
• Hives or bumps
• Pawing at the face
• Vomiting or acting lethargic

Most reactions are mild, however some can escalate quickly. If you’re ever unsure, it’s always best to have your pet evaluated.

If we’re closed, please contact First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency for after-hours care 🐾

Clover is doing great and back to her normal, adorable self 💕 Likely No Lesson Learned 😭

Okay… I lied 😅
Not on purpose—we thought renovations were done.

Then we decided to go ahead and apply epoxy… which meant tearing everything up again 🙃

So today I got the full experience hanging out in the lobby with all of you and your pups 🐶 (honestly, I loved it)

Today we’re celebrating a very special birthday… Charlie Barkley turns FOUR

If you’ve ever met Charlie, you already know — he is nearly 100 pounds of pure goofball. He is 100% convinced he is a lap dog (he is not), and he has personally victimized my feet more than once by full-speed running across them

The unfortunate truth is… Charlie gets in trouble for doing the exact same things as everyone else — he’s just… significantly larger and slightly more destructive about it

However — and this is important — he is also the sweetest, most loyal boy.
At the end of the day, when I call all the dogs… Charlie is actually the only one who reliably comes back

And if that doesn’t sum him up perfectly, I don’t know what does

I adopted Charlie after his previous owners passed away, and I’ll be honest — I didn’t know much about Airedales at the time. Turns out, they are pretty incredible dogs

A few fun things I’ve learned about Airedales since becoming Charlie’s person:
• They’re known as the “King of Terriers” — and yes, he absolutely carries himself like royalty
• They are incredibly intelligent… which means they are also incredibly good at selective listening
• They were originally bred as working dogs — hunters, protectors, and even war dogs
• They are loyal to their people in a way that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it
• They tend to stay playful and puppy-like well into adulthood (clearly)

Charlie may be big, clumsy, and occasionally guilty of minor foot-related crimes…
but he is also deeply loved

Happy 4th Birthday, Charlie Barkley!
