I have had several ask me about making my home made dog food.
There some really good sites with lots of information to help if you want to go all in. I do feel like if I added a vitamin source I would be good and there are lots of them out there.
At first I was really concerned with digestive upset but we have never had that at all. Now if you give too much liver you will. So I always stay on the light side.
My basic recipe is
I still feed about 50% kibble so I do not add a vitamin source. As of right now I feed about60-70% protein (pork, chicken, beef, duck, rabbit, venison) are some common ones. About 20-30% veggies and 5-10% organ meat. No more than 5% liver.
I buy frozen veggies and steam them and blend in blender with a little bone
broth (no onion) or water.
I lightly cook my meat and drain it. I prefer local beef and 80/90%. Then I blend my veggies and mix them in and I usually add a can of pumpkin to 10 # of meat.
Sometimes I add eggs at the end about 5 per 10 # meat. I also add ground up egg shells or you can purchase on Amazon.
Then I bag up a weeks work and freeze
They get blueberries and sometimes a spoon of yogurt and or cottage cheese most mornings and 3x a week they get a few sardines. The ones in water not oil.
Lots of people add tumeric but neither of my dogs tolerate it well. Some people add oats and brown rice. But I try to stay away from fillers and carbs. I do add flax seed some.
At first I made smaller portions until I figured out what worked for us. Now I make about 30 # at a time.
As Abby aged she has developed food intolerances. And I tested her through Glacier Peak and she has intolerances to lots of proteins and preservatives and dyes. She chewed her feet and the hair was red and her feet inflamed. We tried so many dog foods and it just got worse. She is much better now that I have been doing this.
In the comments I will add some screen shots of different options.
Also look at your local beef suppliers. I found a lady I get beef from who sells a mix of organ meat for dogs. It’s great for us it’s liver, organs and esophagus which is really good for dogs. I found at the OKC farmers market.
Some of the raw companies have these mixes also. I do feed this raw. But that is all the raw I feed. I have tried raw and it did not work for us.
Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.
