I expected some backlash about Karma, but people really went all out! I've been called unethical, cruel, abusive, ego-driven, a monster, and evil (among other things). I've been accused of using her as an incubator and only keeping her alive to profit from her suffering. If you've followed me for any length of time, you know none of these things are true. I care deeply about every cat we bring in, and their well-being is my priority. We are a nonprofit. We are all volunteers who don't receive salaries. We are always in debt, and none of us are in this business to get rich (clearly). ๐ธ
A few people used the post as an opportunity to express their hatred for TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). I have previously stated that I will block anyone who does this, and it is not up for debate. Even if we wanted to cull all ferals (like PETA and their followers would prefer), there are no vets in our area that will euthanize colonies. It is a moot point and I will not tolerate rude comments about it. And yes, I limited comments to established followers. I simply don't have time to read and respond to so many people. Feel free to rip me apart for that, too. ๐
Karma came to us full-term. SOVSC expected her to give birth at any moment. We didn't know about the spinal fracture until her vet visit yesterday. Having that information when we first got her would have been helpful. Had we known it would take over a week for her to deliver, we may have chosen to spay/abort. But here we are. ๐คทโโ๏ธ Through all of this Karma has remained resilient. She is full of love and purrs, and does not give any indication that she's suffering. She is not paralyzed, either... she has some use of her back legs. Even if we couldn't save the kittens, we knew we wanted to try and save her. Since she was so close to delivering, we chose not to spay/abort. It would be very similar to a c-section, so we decided to try and save all of the lives involved. We are very much aware of the overpopulation issue in our area (and elsewhere). We are not trying to contribute to the problem, but this was a difficult situation with no easy answers. ๐ข
This morning Karma went into labor and we took her to Rogue Valley Veterinary Emergency. Miraculously, she did not need a c-section. Her foster mom, Cari, acted as midwife while assisting Karma and the vet. They administered Pitocin to help the process, and she delivered 5 healthy babies. She is home now, purring and being very attentive to her kittens, who are nursing and doing well. A few people have reached out about adopting Karma when she's available. There are many animals with spinal injuries who are loved dearly and live happy lives. We would like to give Karma the opportunity for that. Do I want her to be in pain? Of course not. Will I regret letting her live? Possibly. Would I regret ending her life without giving her a chance? Definitely. ๐
Berate me in the comments and leave bad reviews if you'd like. You may not agree with every decision I make, and that's OK. At the end of the day, I know who I am and why I do this. I know my intentions are pure, and I only want what's best for our kitties. What you think or say about me will not change that.
