It's National Black Cat Appreciation Day! 🐾
Did you know that black cats have been given a bad reputation due to false myths and superstition? If you've ever feared a black cat crossing your path, this may be why. During in the Middle Ages, people saw witches as shape-shifting black cats. From then on, black cats were seen as evil entities. But for others, a visit from a black cat was meant for good luck, prosperity and even romance. In some cultures, they were even worshipped.
All cats, no matter the color of their fur, are beautiful, sleek and special in their own way. And if you're lucky enough to have a black cat cross your path or own one, embrace them and show them all of the love in the world. πŸˆβ€β¬›

During such times, making quick decisions about your future can be challenging, especially when taking care of your pets. It's important to keep your furry feline friends safe and comfortable during the summer months. Cats may seem like they can handle the heat, but they still need special attention during hot weather. Here are some essential summer safety tips to keep your cat healthy and happy.

1. Cats are great at finding cool spots in your home, but it's still important to monitor them. When the temperature is too high, it can be difficult for cats to regulate their body temperature, which can lead to heat stroke. Keep the air conditioning on or provide plenty of cool water.

2. Keep windows and doors screened. Cats love lounging by open windows, but it's important to keep them screened to prevent your cat from accidentally falling out or getting stuck. Make sure screens are sturdy and secure to prevent any accidents.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Make sure your cat has access to fresh, clean water at all times. In the summer months, cats can easily become dehydrated. You can also provide wet food or add water to dry food to help keep your cat hydrated.

4. Protect your cat from sunburn. Yes, cats can get sunburned too! White cats, hairless cats, and cats with thin fur are especially susceptible to sunburn. Consider installing UV-blocking films on your windows to help block out some of those harmful rays.

5. Watch out for toxic plants. Summer is the time when many plants are in bloom, but some can be toxic to cats. Lilies, for example, are highly toxic and can cause kidney failure if ingested. Other toxic plants include azaleas, tulips, and daffodils. Make sure to keep these plants out of reach and consult with your veterinarian if you suspect your cat has ingested a toxic plant.

6. Keep your cat away from harmful chemicals. Summer is also the time when many chemicals are used, such as pesticides, fertilizers, and pool chemicals. Keep these chemicals out of reach and always store them in a secure location. If your cat comes into contact with any of these chemicals, seek veterinary care immediately.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your cat stays safe and healthy during the summer months. Remember, if you ever have any concerns about your cat's health or behavior, don't hesitate to contact us through our PetDesk app or give us a call at 904-737-0403.

As the temperature rises with the arrival of summer, it is important to ensure the comfort and safety of your pets. Warm weather can pose a danger to our furry companions, as they struggle to regulate their body temperature. It is crucial to take extra care of your pets during hot weather conditions.

Here are some important tips to ensure the safety of your pets during summer:

1. Never leave your pet in a hot car. The temperature inside a car can increase drastically within minutes, which can lead to heatstroke and suffocation. It is best to leave your pets at home on warm days, and if necessary to travel with them, ensure that they have access to water.

2. Protect your pet's paws from hot surfaces such as asphalt and metal. Walking on hot surfaces can burn their paws and increase body temperature. If surfaces feel hot to the back of your hand, they are too hot for a pet to walk on.

3. Provide plenty of water and shade. If you are out with your pet for an extended period, ensure that they have access to water to avoid dehydration. Try to keep your pet in the shade as much as possible to avoid direct sun exposure.

4. Talk to your groomer to see if a haircut is right for your pet. For some breeds, a haircut can prevent sunburn and keep them cool.

5. Protect your pet from sunburn. Yes, pets can get sunburned too! White dogs, hairless dogs, and dogs with thin fur are especially susceptible to sunburn. Consider installing UV-blocking films on your windows to help block out some of those harmful rays.

5. Keep windows screened to prevent cats from falling out while enjoying the view.

6. Be cautious with food and drinks during backyard barbeques, as certain foods like grapes, onions, and chocolate can be harmful to pets. Keep alcohol away from pets as it can be poisonous to them.

7. Keep your pets away from fireworks. Not only are the loud noises frightening and unsettling to pets, but they also contain harmful chemicals and can lead to injuries and burns if your pets get too close.

8. Summer can be an enjoyable time for pets and their owners, as long as their safety and comfort are prioritized. If you have any questions about keeping your pets safe this summer or want to schedule a visit, just jump onto your PetDesk app and request an appointment or give us a call at 904-737-0403.

The Fourth of July is approaching quickly. Miramar Animal Hospital will be closed this day and normal business hours will resume on July 5th, 2023.
This is your friendly reminder to prepare your pets for those fireworks that will be starting, more than likely, a few days prior to this special day. If your pet gets nervous or anxious during this time, please be sure to reach out to the clinic to get medications filled. You can request these refills on the PetDesk app or by giving us a call at 904-737-0403.
Here are a few other safety tips to follow as well...
- Exercising your pets long before night fall and plan to keep them indoors all evening.
- Secure all exits like fences, doors, and windows to prevent any attempt of a panic escape.
- Be sure that the proper identification and tags are on their collars and microchip information is up to date just in case your pet does happen to get out.
- Minimize the noise as much as possible. Close windows and curtains, cozy up and turn on the TV, have music playing or play white noise in the background.
- Get a new toy or lick mat to keep them occupied and focused on something else.
