Time and patience!
I want to tell you the story of Huey. 🐾
When I met Huey in November 2022 he was shy, more than timid, you could not touch him!
A rescue from London sanctuary. He had lots of anxiety towards other dogs and stuck very close to his brother Harvey. He was so terrified of other dogs he would just bark as loud as he could to “protect” himself.
Needless to say walks with Harvey and Huey started out very loud!!
We started with getting on the couch to put his harness on. He felt comfortable there. Keep in mind he would not go anywhere without Harvey …Ever!
On our walks my eyes were peeled for dogs! We would attempt to pull over, sit calmly and let them pass while having a treato! It was a disaster literally for the first year! The whole neighborhood knew we were coming it was so loud ! But patience and time and a ton of yummy treats prevailed. He was now a grown-up, confident and not afraid. After some coaxing and training, he would also do all of his potties on his walk too! He was much too skittish for that before. This was Amazing!!!
Eventually we could sit calmly and quietly and let the other dogs pass with Huey’s attention on me, a treat, very focused ! We would continue our walk as if nothing happened. Time and patience was on my side, finally!
Huey got dealt a curveball a few months ago. His big brother passed away. Harvey was his rock. We all wondered how it would affect Huey. A few weeks passed and he grieved , we could see it . A few weeks later Huey started to gain his confidence back. After a few attempts he could go on a walk by himself! We all knew Harvey was still with us in spirit, but watching Huey come out of his shell as a confident, happy, solo doggy was heartfelt for sure!
Time and patience! It’s been four years, almost 5! And Huey greets me with lots of happy howling now! He jumps on the couch ready to go, gives me kisses and lets me pet him and give him belly rubs! Other dogs at this point are not worth his time! He’s a busy dog! Sniffing safari’s, finding just the right place to go potty and the continued tradition of treats on walkies for good boys continues! Time and patience. Kindness and understanding.
And just letting Huey be Huey in his own time 💕
