When I first started working with this mare, bolting was her go-to response for everything.
She didn’t understand pressure and release and was especially reactive if a rope was involved.
I had planned to make a full video explaining how we got here, but honestly, it would’ve been a long one—so here’s the short version: The biggest change came from giving her clear, consistent communication.
We took things to the round pen. Any time she chose to bolt, I redirected her, asked her to move her feet, and then gave her a chance to come back and rest.
I rewarded her for staying—even if she flinched—and always gave her the choice.
And yes, sometimes that meant quite a few laps before she would reset.
But by making sure every cue had meaning and every try was acknowledged, we took the guesswork out of it.
She’s still in training and still learning. But now, she lets me pet her down both sides, approach with a lead rope, and even lead her around the pen without resistance—most of the time.
She still has her moments, but the difference is instead of reacting or shutting down, she’s starting to think and check in.
Each session builds a little more trust and understanding. Progress like this takes patience, feel, and timing—but it’s so worth it!
