Animal Rescue Fund of MS (ARF) Mississippi's largest no-kill rescue organization At ARF of MS our rescued pets stay as long as they need to in order to find a forever home. What can you do?

During their stay we look to serving the whole animal with attention to their comprehensive care and medical needs as well as social skills building. The shelter is typically home to over 75 cats and 300 dogs at any given time. We provide the residents a safe and happy environment while they await adoption. Dogs are exercised regularly and volunteers spend time with them at play in the exercise

yards while cats enjoy large whimsical “free –roaming” rooms with habitat to encourage exercise and exploration. All are given loving care and attention by staff and volunteers. Once rehabilitated and ready, they are carefully matched with prospective adopters and placed in loving homes. Like people, animals have distinct personalities and patterns, we at ARF of MS work to perfectly match the right animal with the family, ensuring a long lasting relationship. This beautiful, grey muzzled dog is Briarwood. We took in Briarwood 7 years ago, when a trucker saw someone throw her off the Briarwood bridge onto I 55. She was beat up from the fall and had a fracture in her hip, but she survived.
We treated her for heartworms, got her spayed and here she stayed.
You see, most people, when adopting, overlook the black dogs and cats, and if the black dog has the slightest resemblance to a bully mix, they are equally overlooked.

Her handler is getting out of prison next week and wants so badly for her girl to get out as well. We promised Jen that we would give it a big push.

Briarwood is nonchalant about other dogs, but does NOT care for cats at all. She has a strong prey drive for cats, so we will not adopt her to a home with cats or community cats who may wander into her back yard. Other than that, she is a breeze.

Won't someone give this old gal a home? She is calm, quiet and easy on a leash. She loves hugs and snuggles. She deserves her chance.

Celebrate! Celebrate! Dance to the music!

We have these wonderful women inmates who work for us and help care for the animals at ARF.
We also have a colony of feral cats that we inherited when we moved here. They told their friends that there is food and weather protection at that place filled with giants.
The colony has mostly been all fixed, but one female has been quite the conundrum and is very trap smart. We have rescued and stolen all her children over several years and found them great homes, but Tipper was so elusive.
Well, one of our inmates who cares for the cats including our feral kitties had made it her mission to get Tipper and TODAY was the day.
We GOT HER! She is now at the vet getting fixed and her ear tipped.

So. We posted about the little dog we rescued that had been hit by a car. We have an update on her.
We have named her Laney and the amazing vets at Lakeland Animal Hospital, Dr. Emory, have been so wonderful with her.
Laney's rear leg was shattered and had to be amputated, her front leg had some significant injury, cuts, abrasions and deep tissue trauma, but not a broken leg.

The rear leg could not be set and we agreed that amputation was the only humane choice for this sweet girl. Laney is young, under a year, and has seen some stuff, stuff that horror movies are made of. She is scared of humans, but once she realizes that they are kind, she lowers her guard and allows gentle rubs and hugs.

She will remain at the clinic over the holiday weekend and be ready for a foster on Tuesday, if anyone is up to fostering a tri-pod with fear of new things, humans and fast movements. A quiet and calm place would be a dream for this sweet pup. If you are interested in helping her with a foster, let us know. Do you remember this sweet boi, Prince?
We posted him recently and many people donated to his surgery for the cancer growth in his mouth. He did well in surgery and feels so very much better.
However, we got some sad news.
Prince has malignant melanoma and it is aggressive. Right now, Prince feels great and is happy. He LOVES to eat. He LOVES run around. He LOVES to walk right by your side. He LOVES soft beds.
He LOVES toys.
What he would really really LOVE is a home and a family. He deserves a home and a family. However, it is going to take someone with a very special heart. A heart that will love him beyond belief for whatever time he has left on this plain. He may have 2 months, he may have 12 months. We have no idea, but we do have an idea that there is a very special person out there who is willing to give this fella what he deserves.
I promise you he will show you unconditional love and he will follow your every step, right by your side. When you are sad, he will gently nuzzle you in comfort. When you are happy, he will jump around for joy. He will not care if your hair looks bad or if your jeans are too tight. He will just be happy to be your best friend.
Adoption fees are waived and we will cover medical care for his remaining of life for the perfect home. Please share his story for us, we know our friends are the very best out there and you all can help us make his dreams come true.

Today, at the end of the day, Peggy received a call about a dog that had been hit by a car earlier in the day and was hanging out under a bush at a church on Woodrow Wilson.
Peggy and I loaded up with the usual things we know we will need in instances like this and headed over to look for the pup.

After a bit of searching, we found her. Somehow she had managed to get over to the shade of a Crape Myrtle and it appears she has been there a minute because there were dishes indicating that people had been bringing her food, under a different tree.

She was a bit scared and anxious, not sure if we were there for good or bad. After some gentle coaxing, we were able to get her on a soft blankie and then onto a home made stretcher, and were able to carry her to a spot for her to have quiet and comfort until our vets are open tomorrow. She clearly has a broken rear leg and depending on how old the breaks are, we shall see what needs to be done.

As per usual, this is not in our budget and we will need help with her medical bills after we know what all is needed. It may be a good bit or maybe not. We are hoping for less.

She has had a flea/tick pill , pain meds and some antibiotics to get her started. A big bowl of canned food (that she said was magically delicious) and some nice cold water. That along with a comforter and an air conditioned room and she is one happy camper.

Meanwhile, we couldn’t wait to share this happy news!! This is Mr. Bear, and this is his hero, Rachel Goodridge. It is a wonderful and very rare thing for someone to reach out to us specifically looking for a cat with a known illness or special needs. Mr. Bear has FIV. Rachel has another cat at home with FIV and was searching for a companion for her kitty. We knew exactly who would be perfect for them!! 💕💕 Mr. Bear has won over all our hearts at ARF with his sweet, gentle spirit!! WE LOVE YOU, MR. BEAR, and we couldn’t be happier!! Rachel, thank you for taking this sweet boy HOME!! 💕🐾💕🐾

Look at this handsome boi, excited about getting to go to the vet for his surgery this morning.
He came through the surgery very well and is so very happy to have that bothersome growth removed from his boopy snoot.s

This sweet boi in the photo is Prince.
Prince is scheduled for surgery tomorrow at Luckney Animal Hospital for a very fast growing tumor in his mouth. Prince had a dental done within the last 12 months and the growth was not there, and suddenly it was.

The kitten in the photo doesn't have a name yet, as she came in this morning. Someone found her in bushes this morning and we rushed her to AMC for immediate surgery. She will probably lose both eyes.
We also have two other dogs and a cat who need some medical care promptly.

Our bus that we are driving to MSU on Wednesday is in the hospital getting it's ac repaired. We have 21 cats and 8 dogs scheduled for this trip and we can not make it without air conditioning. The estimated cost of the ac repair is just under $1,000.
We had made a plea two weeks ago to help us raise enough money for a load of dog and cat food, the rental to go pick it up from the distribution site and for the ac repair on the bus. We only raised enough to partially cover the cost of the food.
Over the weekend we had someone offer a donation match for us to help us with these needs that has not been very successful.

Friends, I really don't want to cancel our trip to MSU for getting these animals altered and we simply must get these animals surgeries done.

We survive solely on donations and this year our donation support has been much lower than in years past.

We NEED your help, these animals NEED your help. When we make these pleas for support, a core group of people always step up, but they can not carry the load for us. This flash of greased lightening is Lady Luck. She is from our best guess around 3 years old. She LOVES to run and play with other dogs and was seen recently on one of our videos playing with Smokey Joe.
Lady Luck currently lives in the clinic, we moved her over there to see how she would do outside of the shelter environment and she has NAILED it. She keeps her room clean, she goes out to exercise and do those outside things to keep her room clean. Then, after a brief but fast excursion, she runs back inside and straight to her room. She appears to be good with cats and absolutely loves humans.

We have had a very expensive couple of months and our vet bills are climbing to the top of Mount Everest again.

Friends we have two immediate and urgent needs:
We have an opportunity to purchase 5,000 pounds of high quality dog food and 1,000 pounds of cat litter for $.15 per pound. But it is in Picayune Ms and we have to pick it up. This requires us to hire 2men in a truck. This rental is around $800, depending on time to get there and back.
Second urgent needs is help with funds to get our bus ac repaired and working. We use the bus once a month to drive our dogs and cats to MSU for spay and neuter. We go again on 8/20/25 and baby it is too hot with no air. Estimated cost at this point is $1,200.
