The sick babies are finally on the mend!
I took all 3 to the vet yesterday. I was concerned that Honey was losing weight, & Buttermilk wasn't gaining & wouldn't eat. I would syringe the liquid into her mouth & she would let it dribble out.
The vet said they have a parasite that was making it hard to absorb nutrients, so she gave me a medicine for that. She also gave me several cans of high calorie/high protein prescription food to blend with the formula to help them put on weight.
It looks like Honey's eyes might recover. The swelling has gone way down, but he can't open them yet. The vet said it looks like one of Buttermilk's eyes has ruptured. But the other one might be ok. The ruptured one will have to be eventually removed.
Then there's Biscuit (grey tabby). The first 24 hours was rough, but it seems like the antibiotics worked quick for him, because the day after that 24 hour period he started putting away wet kitten food like a teenager in a growth spurt! He's started displaying playful kitten energy, as shown in the video on this post. His eyes are in bad shape but the vet can't yet tell what his prognosis will be with vision. We'll have to wait and see.
All 3 have finally figured out the litterbox! I started putting them in it after each feeding & yesterday evening they caught on. It amazes me how quickly kittens learn to use the litterbox, & it amazes me that 3 blind kittens who have never used a litterbox figured it out as quickly as they did.
I put some dry food in their cage before I went to bed last night on the off chance that they might try it in the night. Hugh does the early morning feeding for me since I do the late night one, and he said Buttermilk and Biscuit were chowing away on it this morning! Yay!
Today was the first time I didn't have to syringe feed them! I think they've regained their sense of smell & all ate the pate/formula mixture from a bowl. I didn't have to do much coaxing.
All in all, I think they'll be ok. Even if some vision is lost in this ordeal, I think they'll be fine. They'll just have to be indoor cats.
