Drs. LaPoint and Olson are off to this year’s American Association of Equine Practitioners conference in Denver CO. This is always a great conference and an excellent opportunity to stay abreast of new research and developments in equine health. This year’s keynote will be given by the renowned behaviorist Dr. Temple Grandin which should be a fascinating discussion.

Dr Nash and the rest of the FLEP team will be holding down the fort here and available for routine and emergency visits as usual.

We know many of you have heard and are concerned about the current Equine Herpes Virus(EHV) outbreak. Thankfully this outbreak is being watched carefully and there are many veterinarians and horse owners working hard to contain it. Please see the post below from the American Association of Equine Practitioners(AAEP) regarding the free webinar happening tomorrow to provide up to date information.

You can find more information about EHV at
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19AriSK8WR/?mibextid=wwXIfr

In light of the current EHV-1 outbreak, the AAEP and the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) have organized a horse owner education webinar to bring you the most up to date information on this issue.

Next Tuesday, join specialists Lewis R. “Bud” Dinges (Texas Animal Health Commission Executive Director and Texas State Veterinarian), Dr. Krista Estell (AAEP/EDCC) and Dr. Katie Flynn (USEF) for an informative discussion about what EHV-1 is, how to recognize it, and most importantly, how to prevent its spread.

This webinar is FREE, but registration is required. Register here: https://events.zoom.us/ev/AnIoJrASj0vuX7Q_K87mKEjg5bxeMAkqp7fpSoOgVtVm_Zgo1g5m~AiiV7ZQ3bbmlEW2iSkeRTSAfMCYf2QhFMoprr7WRbM_MsiJRcBGT1oLj0Q

*PLEASE NOTE: the attendee limit for this session is capped at 1,000. However, all who register will be emailed a link to an on-demand recording that will become available 24 hours after the live session ends.

This year's first cases of arboviruses, EEE and West Nile virus, have been reported in horses in NY.

To date there are 3 confirmed cases of EEE in horses in Madison and Onondaga counties. All 3 horses were unvaccinated and unfortunately all died or were euthanized.

There has been 1 confirmed case of WNV in Chautauqua county, also in an unvaccinated horse, though she has since recovered.

Arboviruses are spread by mosquitos, and result in fever, lethargy, neurologic disease and potentially death (especially in the case of EEE). Vaccines for these diseases are generally highly protective when routinely and appropriately administered. These are part of the annual vaccines we recommend all horses receive. If your horses have not yet had their annual shots please call FLEP to schedule an appointment now so we can get them appropriate protection and coverage.

Slobbers!!
This time of year we see a lot of horses drooling excessively due to a condition called “slobbers”. Slobbers is caused by a small fungus that grows on white and red clover, most commonly when plants are stressed due to over grazing, heat, or drought. This fungus produces a chemical called slaframine which stimulates the salivary glands causing the excessive drool we see. Thankfully, as long as horses have good access to water, we don’t see any adverse effects, other than being gross of course! To stop the drool we simply remove the horses from the source of clover if possible and move them to another pasture. While we can’t fix the weather conditions that stress pastures we can manage them by rotating horse through different pastures to make sure they aren’t over grazed.

Believe it or not green grass is here! At this time of year the sugar content in grass can be especially high. This means it's time to make sure our mini's, ponies, EMS/metabolic horses and laminitic prone horses are on dry lots or wearing grazing muzzles.

The ice is finally gone and ticks are back! (Though they never really left!)

A reminder for careful tick checks when grooming, pay special attention to the areas under the jaw, in the armpits, and the groin.
Fly sprays, and other products like EquiSpot and Seresto collars (generally 1.5 large dog collars per average sized horse), can all work in helping to deter them as well.

If you find a tick bite we generally recommend removing the tick and treating topically with triple antibiotic ointment. If you are worried your horse is showing signs of illness from a tick bite (fever, lethargy, inappetence…) please call FLEP!
