PawesomeDogs.Com Dog training is about helping animals learn, and setting the individual up for success. I continue to learn and study my craft every day.

I have been developing my methodology of Non-Force Dog Training for over 20 years, based on canine behavior, science, and have helped many happy clients who were at their wits ends. I have helped people from all over the World. I believe Dog training is an Art form, I look at the Dogs whole environment, from diet to exercise, to containment and socialization. I help develop a bond of trust and res

pect by working with the Dogs behavior and physiology, instead of against it. My goal is to help create flexible thinking, problem solving Dogs, that can go anywhere and do anything.

Management; is sometimes picking up every single Dog toy, bone, food, or anything of any value to your individual Dog in both your yard and home, before your friend’s Dog comes to visit your Dog.

This also applies for any new Dog or Puppy being introduced to your family inside your home or property.

Don’t be a scary stranger, don’t reach out to pet a Dog without permission. One step better is not to reach out at all, allow the Dog to choose to come to you, and always respect their choice to move away and not be touched.
When meeting a Dog for the first time, in a safe situation, with permission. Allow the Dog the opportunity to chose to come to you and gather information from you freely.
If the Dog shows interest in being petted, one good place to pet a Dog for the first time is on their shoulder, preferably standing to the side of them and not in front of them like in this photograph. Pet them softly and briefly at first, then pause and wait to see if the Dog stays interested in being petted further. If yes, then continue sharing affection, if not they will move their body, or their head away from you displaying they are choosing not to be touched at this time.
Offering choice, and consent, makes for a great first impression, and will build trust in any relationship.

What’s a good choice…?
A good choice is one freely made that results in a satisfactory outcome in a moment, a situation, and/or environment.
For some people and their Dogs a good choice for them, might not be a good choice for other people and their Dogs.
Sometimes it’s a good choice to jump in the water, other times it is not, good choices are dependent on what is going on in the moment, in the situation, and in the environment.
Freely made choices that maintain or improve the situation are good choices.

Consent and Choice are not something that can be imposed upon another. Every individual has there own preferences for proximity, and to learn those takes time. Ask first, listen more, and respect the information being provided. Touching anyone with permission is up to the individual. Trust takes as much time as is needed for the individual to feel comfortable and safe, which is extremely important. Be considerate, be respectful, be reliable.

There is no need for physical, mental, or emotional pressure to comply, everything is based on providing them with the ability to learn at their individual pace. Being rewarded for making good choices, and reinforcing desired behaviors, builds reliable behaviors, and that starts with being reliable for them. Everything we do with animals can be a promise of pleasing outcomes.

Keep your Dog’s water bowls clean enough to also drink out of them yourself.

Wash with soap and water daily.
One can also wipe down bowls with a sanitation solution of 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 gallon of water, rinse and let air dry before refilling to prevent the growth of molds, yeast, algae, and fungi.

Dogs are associative learners, Dogs are also huge visual learners.
Dogs process and retain information visually nearly as well as they do with their sense of smell. Dogs learn better visually, than they do audibly, and far greater still than they do physically.
How do Dogs process information best? They do so with their olfactory system.

Physical gestures with associated reinforcement histories become hand signals, and visual visual cues of information shared between teammates.
***Warning*** Physical gestures with associated punishment histories can become threats. Scolding a Dog with the use of gestures is counterproductive to learning, and detrimental to being perceived as a trustworthy source of reliable outcomes.
Hand signals, and visual cues, are gestures.

P.S. Prompting; providing information with physical gestures, should not include intimidation or coercion, and should not include any contact at all, that prompting by any definition would include minimal contact is ridiculous. Any contact at all should be considered molding, which is about physical adjustments, something some people take way too far, but that’s a different topic.

Think of all the many pieces that go into learning something, like a box of LEGOs. There’s a photo of what it looks like assembled, and there are a thousand pieces inside that are put together over time. Putting all these tiny pieces together is the fun part of building something together. Build solid foundations of fun, that support everything else that follows.
Enjoy the journey together.

Lifting and carrying.
To lift or carry a Dog, start at their level with their side to the front of you, with one arm supporting their rump, and another arm supporting their chest, lift with your knees with the Dog comfortably against your chest.
Being able to do this, takes conditioning a Dog to being held this way.
1: Start with just your hand against their chest and reward them for increasing durations of this hold.
2: Once the Dog is comfortable with having your hand on their chest, you can move your other arm behind their legs, and reward them for being comfortable with you doing that.
3: Now that you can have one arm on their chest and another supporting their rump, move both hands towards the front of the Dog and securely pull them into your chest, sort of like a open hug.
Once you are able to do these first 3 steps, you can then move on to practicing lifting.
Squat down on the side of your Dog, engage the practiced hold, and lift with your knees, supporting them with both arms, and securing against your chest.
How long it takes each individual Dog to be comfortable with each progressive step, is solely dependent on the Dog.
The more you, the human, practices this hold, the better you will be at performing it with the Dog’s consent.
Practice, repeat, reinforce, and reward.
Adjust to your individual Dog, some tails need to be tucked under their rump. Some Dogs prefer the arm to go between their rear legs and along stomach to where the hand supports their rib cage from beneath them.
