In my ā€œcommunication is medicineā€ era. 🩺✨

Some days it feels like we’re speedrunning medicine

🚪 In. 🐾 Exam. šŸ’Š Plan. 🚪 Out.

But here’s the thing… clients remember how we made them feel just as much as (and sometimes maybe even more than) what we did for their pet.

šŸ’” When they feel heard, they’re more likely to follow the plan, less likely to call back with the same questions, and way more likely to trust you long term.

That doesn’t mean adding 20 minutes to every appointment.

It means:

āœ… Walking in with context so you’re not starting from zero
āœ… Asking the questions that uncover the real concerns
āœ… Using your team like the superheroes they are
āœ… Giving yourself permission to say, ā€œWe need more time on this, let’s follow up in a week to continue the conversationā€

Small changes, big impact.
Because a calmer client, clearer plan, and fewer ā€œWait, what?ā€ moments benefit the pet and your sanity.

Which of these tips do you already use in the exam room? Which one do you want to try next?

šŸ‘‰ Follow for more tips on communication, clinical empathy, and making every minute in the exam room count.

Nosara: Waves, Wildlife, and a Whole Lot of Heart 🌊🐾🌓

This trip had it all: surfing lessons, mountain views, fresh-caught fish, and plenty of moments soaking in Costa Rica’s pura vida lifestyle. But the best part? The chance to give back.

From helping in the clinic and lending a hand with surgeries, to meeting incredible locals (human and furry), this wasn’t just a vacation. It was a reminder of how connected our world really is when we lead with compassion.

Days started with ocean breezes and ended with great food, laughter, and the kind of conversations that stay with you long after you leave.

Here’s to travel that fills your soul, challenges your skills, and leaves a positive pawprint wherever you go. šŸ’™

Let’s get something clear right away: This isn’t about shaming the shamers.

It’s about holding up a mirror to one of the most common, and most human, communication habits in veterinary medicine.

Sometimes we’re tired. Stressed. Frustrated by repeated noncompliance or heartbreaking outcomes. Shame sneaks into the conversation not because we’re bad people, but because we’re human.

But here’s the thing: Shame doesn’t lead to better outcomes. It shuts people down.

This post is about recognizing that reflex and replacing it with something more effective, trust, empathy, and connection. Because when clients feel safe, they stay. They ask. They try. They return. And that’s how we help more pets.

Let’s meet them where they are. Let’s be the team that builds bridges, not walls.

Some phrases are so common in vetmed that we don’t even notice when we’re saying them, until we pause and ask:

ā€œHow might this land on the other side of the table?ā€

This isn’t about being perfect or robotic with our words.

It’s about being aware of how language shapes the experience.

It’s about being mindful of the emotions in the room, ours and theirs.

It’s about letting empathy guide the way we respond.

And it’s about choosing compassion over control when things feel tense or uncertain.

Small shifts in how we communicate can change how someone feels about their visit, their options, and their ability to care for their pet.

That’s the work. And it starts with paying attention.

šŸ“Œ Save this if you’re working on more mindful conversations.

🧠 Share it with someone who’s trying to lead with more awareness in the exam room.

šŸŽ‰ Officially 33. Still caffeinated, still compassionate… and not getting carded anymore (we had a good run šŸ˜…).

Yesterday was my birthday, and it gave me a moment to reflect on just how much this past year has shaped me.

I’ve made so many new friends, colleagues, and connections. Some were in-person, some through screens, and all of them helped me grow into the version of myself I’m proud of today.

We traveled a lot this year, and I hope that never stops. Each new place and new experience has filled my cup in a way that work alone never could.

🩺 I leaned hard into clinical empathy and client communication and haven’t looked back. These aren’t just concepts to me anymore. They’re the foundation of how I show up for pets, their people, and the teams I work with.

Relief medicine has taught me so much. I’ve learned to adapt quickly, connect deeply, and lead with purpose, even when the environment changes day to day. I’ve found confidence in my ability to thrive as a relief vet, and I’m excited to keep leading with communication, empathy, and compassion at the center.

I’ve made mistakes this year and learned from every single one. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been meaningful.

Here’s what I know for sure: showing up matters. Leading with heart matters. And being kind to yourself while pushing for better is where the magic happens.

33 feels like momentum. It feels like clarity. It feels like owning my growth while staying grounded in who I’ve always been.

To everyone who made this past year of life special, thank you. Your support, whether in a big way or a quiet one, means the world to me.

And to all who reached out yesterday with messages, comments, texts, and calls, you made me feel incredibly seen and appreciated.

Here’s to more growth, more joy, more connection, and of course, more beagle cuddles in year 33.

Drop a šŸŽ‚, 🐶, or šŸ’™ if you’ve ever connected with something I’ve shared. I’m so grateful for you.

Heading to AVMA 2025 this weekend?

Catch me at the Roo booth ( #1148) this Saturday from 1:45 to 2:45 PM to talk all things relief vet life. The highs, the challenges, and how it’s helped me find more balance, flexibility, and fulfillment in vet med.

Whether you’re already doing relief, thinking about it, or just curious what it’s like to work in a bunch of different clinics in one city, I’m happy to chat and share what I’ve learned (or just vibe about scrubs, clinical empathy, or favorite patient stories šŸ˜„)

Let’s connect. Hope to see you there!

Trust and empathy can transform every client interaction. Here’s how I make it happen. 🐾

In VetMed, connection goes beyond diagnostics and treatments—it’s about trust, understanding, and collaboration. Clinical empathy isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential for better outcomes and stronger relationships.

Here are 8 ways I build trust with pet parents every day:

1ļøāƒ£ Introduce yourself and ask for their name.
2ļøāƒ£ Listen to understand, not just to respond.
3ļøāƒ£ Use signposting to guide the conversation.
4ļøāƒ£ Validate their feelings.
5ļøāƒ£ Make medical jargon make sense.
6ļøāƒ£ Always have options and collaborate.
7ļøāƒ£ Lead with empathy and build trust with compassion.
8ļøāƒ£ Create a judgment-free zone.

When pet parents feel supported, heard, and respected, we create an environment where both care and communication thrive.

šŸ’¬ Which of these tips do you already use? Which one will you try next? Let me know in the comments!

šŸ“Œ Save this post for your next busy clinic day and share it with your team—let’s create a culture of empathy in VetMed!
