Dashain A page for current and former housemates and friends of Dolores (formerly Dashain). Dashain is the vegetarian/vegan house.

In 1994, the tireless work and dedication of Santa Barbara Student Housing co-opers led to the acquisition of Dashain House. As a themed vegetarian house, Dashain was the first building within the co-op to have it's own meal plan. Initially it was going to be called the House of Seitan, but Dashain sounded friendlier as it also paid homage to a house pet. The house strives for ethical and cruelty-

free food consumption, and buys organic produce from the local food cooperative and farmers’ markets. Dashain maintains its own garden space out back, where residents can watch the sunset, build a bonfire, harvest homegrown kale or just chill in the ocean breeze. The kitchen, always warm and inviting, is a gathering place for Dashainians and friends — on a typical afternoon, you might find people listening to music, discussing social justice, or baking delicious vegan dessert.

Our vegan Friendsgiving was blessed with sunny skies and great companionship. We also had a powerful conversation led by Nadia Abushanab on the intersection of culture, food, and other social justice issues (racism, feminism, food insecurity, etc.) and how we can incorporate culture into vegetarianism/veganism in order to make it more inclusive. Join us on January 28th from 12-3 PM for our second vegan brunch potluck series - this time we’ll focus on how gender and vegetarianism/veganism intersect. Hope to see you there!
