๐ธSpring has sprung and these two flowers are blooming!๐ธ
Mylee and Daisy came in for their first vet visit with us to start vaccines, be dewormed, and get heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives.
Keeping your pet on year-round preventatives is an essential step in protecting them from getting heartworm disease, Lyme disease, and other illnesses. April is Heartworm Awareness Month and we want to emphasize the importance of prevention! Heartworm is a mosquito-borne parasite that lives in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected animals. Even missing 1 dose of preventative can leave your pet vulnerable to infection.
The American Heartworm Society recommends heartworm testing once a year and using heartworm prevention all year long. We recommend starting to test at 9 months of age to screen for infection since heartworm disease is only detectable 6 months after infection. However, we can get ahead of this by starting prevention early. Thankfully, puppies can be started on heartworm prevention as early as 8 weeks old!
