Congrats to Miss Maybelle!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Maybelle just wrapped her 3-week bootcamp with us and she NAILED IT! Maybelle is about 5 years old and spent much of her life in the shelter system. Her family adopted her just two months prior to sending her for training. She came in quite a bit unsure, but finished up learning some new skills and with a TON of confidence and a much healthier mindset! By FAR one of the sweetest little Pitties we’ve ever worked with! She’s on her way to a happier, healthier life with her new family! Can’t wait to see her back here for Daycare! Welcome to the Blur Star family little girl!!

Miss Maybelle is just finishing up her 3-week boot camp with us and she’s come SUCH a long way! Maybelle is about 5-6 years old and her family had just adopted her two months before sending her to us for training. Her human is an elderly gentleman who walks with a cane, so of course, we needed to teach this girl some special skills. Her first hurdle was getting over her fear of the cane. She has learned that it is just part of her life now and nothing to be afraid of. Her second hurdle was slowing down her pace, which was difficult for this high energy girl! We think she’s doing pretty stellar! Those EARS though!!!🤣🥰

We had 3 graduates today: Beau, Gigi and Bella! And they all did stellar, as did their humans!! Everyone got a huge confidence boost (people too😉👍🏽), learned how to communicate, and had fun doing it! Congrats guys, and happy training!! And as always, we’ll be along for the ride!

So let’s talk about PLAY with your dog.

Play…real, actual, engaging PLAY is a very important part of your dogs life, and WE should be the one directing it. You may have heard rescues, or other “dog trainers“ say you should never play tug with your dog because it teaches possession and resource guarding. We couldn’t disagree more! In fact, if done properly, it does the exact opposite! Tug is one of the BEST games you can play with your dog! It’s an excellent way to build your dog’s confidence, engage with your dog, and still be able to teach some control and obedience during the game, especially for your working dogs! But most importantly, it’s SATISFYING for your dog! Here at Blue Star K9, we actually TEACH play, and it is an integral part of our training programs.

Mr. Beau here has just started his second week of bootcamp with us. He came in nervous and a little shut down, had NO idea what play even was, and struggled with connecting with us the first few days. You can see at the start of week 2, we have a COMPLETELY different dog! Let’s also mention, this is only his second day in the prong collar, which was an extremely easy transition for him because of our conditioning phase. We’ve made a positive association with the collar, simply by putting the collar on the dog, (never connecting a leash to it!) and doing a good play session every time that collar goes on. After a couple of days and several play sessions, our dogs are excited when we come in with the collar because it’s GO TIME! Now, after a couple days of this, when we connect a leash and slowly begin to teach the language, it’s super easy for the dogs to understand and they take to it very quickly because of that positive association we’ve made with it through PLAY!

Let’s talk about tools in dog training.

Everyone seems to think dog trainers that use prong collars or e-collars use “pain, fear and intimidation” to train…and they couldn’t be more WRONG. Do you know that a prong collar actually looks like that to MIMIC Mother Nature? To speak to your dog in a LANGUAGE THEY ARE BORN TO UNDERSTAND??? Don’t believe me? Here’s some real actual “science” you can do yourself right now! Go to your local dog park. Just stand outside the fence and observe. In the first five minutes, how many times did you see a dog put its teeth around another dog‘s neck playing? 20? 30 times? That’s a prong collar in action! A prong collar is used to simply give your dog information. If you can’t understand this, then you simply do NOT know dog behavior. 
The dreaded e-collar! Did you know that we actually TRAIN your dog on a setting YOU can’t even feel?? E-collars are NOT “no” buttons. They are a communicative device that gives you a digital leash and a way to speak to and guide your dog from a half mile away! Both of these tools are LANGUAGES you can teach your dog. Once your dog becomes fluent in those languages, we use them less and less. EVERY DOG OWNERS GOAL SHOULD BE A NAKED DOG. We use tools, ‘obedience’ (as a tool!!), toys etc to GET us there. But to truly build a reliable off-leash dog….that is 1000% the RELATIONSHIP you build with that dog!!!

Congrats to Pepper and Franki and their people! Pepper came to us at 4-years-old, stressy and reactive. She left much more confident, calm and comfortable in the world, and her humans with a great deal of knowledge, education and new skills. And Franki the Golden was crazy energy, mom couldn’t even walk her, and now, well she’s amazing! And mom learned a whole new skill set! They’re all on their way to a much happier, healthier and harmonious home life! And as always, we’ll be along for the ride!
