Service Dog Project Inc.

Service Dog Project Inc. Service Dog Project Inc. is a non-profit organization training Great Dane Service Dogs for mobility. Our second mission is to serve our local community.

SDP’s main mission is to breed, raise, train, and donate certified service dogs to people who experience difficulty with their balance or mobility. These partnerships often help to enhance the recipient’s quality of life as they attain greater independence. Preference is given to military veterans, first responders and their families. SDP’s farm is a destination for all ages — from teens doing com

munity service, to seniors in search of a meaningful task and social interaction, to military veterans (many with PTSD) who enjoy feeling useful and connected while doing farm chores. Our Road Show project of dogs and trainers visiting senior centers provides much-needed smiles and comfort.

Cricket spent some time today training at bentleywarrentrucking, where she got to experience the intensity of their operation for the first time. When their ledge crushing machines, stone conveyors, and giant hoppers are all fired up, it makes for a very loud environment. Add to that the large dump trucks, tractor trailers, and enormous front-end loaders driving around, and it becomes a significant test for our dogs. While a bit apprehensive at first, Cricket did a great job adjusting to the challenge!

Cricket had to channel some brave energy today while visiting Ipswich for the first time. She watched the commuter train arrive at and depart from the station, then hung out at the busiest intersection in town, and wrapped up her morning with her first visit to Bentley Warren Trucking, Inc. A video from the Bentley Warren stop will be posted separately.

Walnut was a very brave boy today! He visited Guitar Center, where an employee kindly demonstrated a drum set for us. Walnut was very curious but not scared. He also enjoyed the refreshing cool of the ice rinks at Essex Sports Center, where he took in some hockey action while practicing walking forward and backward down the narrow rows of the metal bleachers. Walnut’s busy morning also included stops at Danvers Indoor Sports, Costco, and PetSmart. In addition to today’s excitement, Walnut wanted to share photos of his new girlfriend, Black Labrador Ireland, who he met at last Saturday’s Woofstock festival!

Cricket trained this week at Danvers Indoor Sports (DIS), Costco, and PetSmart. DIS had nearly all their indoor fields and courts in use for basketball, field hockey, and other sports and activities. Cricket was unfazed by all the noise and excitement, and she does very well in crowds of children ranging from 18 months on up to teenagers. She tackled the daunting 19-step staircase like a pro, methodically ascending all 19 steps one at a time. She also practiced extended down/stays, along with recall, as well as her “unders” and “falls.”

The SDP team had a blast on Saturday at Woofstock 2025 in Kennebunk, ME. Organized by the Animal Welfare Society, the event featured dozens of vendors, live music, and a wide array of food vendors. Service Dog Banks and Hunter joined SDITs Cashew, Elwood, Peanut, and Walnut, as well as retired SD Gelli, for the festivities. The hundreds of other dogs in attendance provided our dogs with a great training opportunity. The event gave SDP excellent exposure to the Southern Maine community, with lots of new and valuable contacts made. We had a ton of traffic at our booth, and York County Kennel Club was gracious in inviting our overflow into their adjacent booth. Purina generously donated countless bags of dog-related goodies for us to distribute. In addition to our dogs, beautiful Black Labrador “Ireland” was there representing YCKC and took part in some of the group shots below.

Cashew had his first doctor’s office experience this week at boston.vision, home of Trainer John’s ophthalmologist.. He did a great “under legs” in the waiting room, and he was perfectly behaved in the exam room while the doctor performed some tests. At the end of the appointment, she asked for Cashew to be walked through the clinic so her fellow doctors and staff could see him. Cashew also spent some time in downtown Andover walking along busy Main Street. He is very comfortable with trucks, buses, and other loud vehicles.

Cashew has been enjoying a mini-vacation the past ten days while Trainer Doug was on his own vacation. Cash had a fun stay for a few nights with sister Peanut and her foster family in Maine before moving to another temporary foster family in Andover, MA, for the past week. Cash quickly formed a bond with that family and their Airedale pup, Maisie. In addition to hosting him, they have taken Cashew to stores, town offices, an outdoor movie event, the Andover Bookstore (oldest continuously operated independent bookstore in America), and regular hikes on nature trails by their home. They absolutely adore Cashew and can’t wait for Doug to go on vacation again!

Acorn drew a crowd of admirers this weekend at the Veterans Music Festival, Benefits, and Career Expo in Quincy, MA. He made many new friends of all ages - mostly human, but a few four-legged ones as well. He enjoyed meeting some great people from Disabled American Veterans (DAV), veteransvoicenetwork, and lots of other organizations, as well as many individuals and families. Acorn even got to pose with four of the Boston Red Sox World Series Championship trophies! Everyone was impressed with the skills and maturity he exhibited as he navigated the crowds, against the backdrop of loud live music and even musket firing demonstrations. Upon returning home, he had to snuggle with his brother Walnut, as they hadn’t seen each other for six hours 🤣.

Even the moose was impressed when he saw handsome boy Cashew at Kittery Trading Post! After some shopping at their giant store, Cashew checked out a few of the outlet stores in Kittery, ME, including Crate & Barrel, Skechers, New Balance, and Pepper Palace. He also made new friends while buying some gourmet loaves at When Pigs Fly Sourdough Breads. He finished off with some bulk shopping at BJ's Wholesale Club in Seabrook, NH. After all that excitement, Cashew napped very well on the ride home 😴.
