It appears we’re going right into the game with no practice. Potential for 8-13” (we’ll see) of snow, which may be wet and heavy.
Some quick thoughts:
1. Prepare to not travel unless absolutely necessary, not because YOU can’t handle winter driving conditions, but because you don’t know how prepared others are.
2. If you are shoveling, do so in moderation and potentially at various points of the storm. It’s easier to shovel or blow 2 inches of snow at a time, 6 times, than 12 inches of snow one time.
3. Keep lawn space cleared for pets (if you have them). Paws can get frostbite, too.
4. Consider keeping decks clear even though you’re not using them. 12-14 inches of snow over 120 square feet weighs more than 20 people standing on it.
5. Keep FIREPLACE, FURNACE, AND DRYER VENTS CLEAR to prevent carbon monoxide from being retained in the house.
6. Clear the end of the driveway as soon as possible after the snow plows go by—-it’s 10 times more difficult if allowed to freeze.
That said, if you’re unable to do it, ask for help. It’s not worth risking your life for a clear driveway.
