☀️🔥 Too hot to trot? No problem!

Beat the heat with cool indoor adventures for your pets! 🐶🐱🌬️

Just because it's steamy outside doesn’t mean your pets have to be bored! Try these fun ways to keep tails wagging indoors:

🧠 Puzzle toys & treat games – Keep those brains busy!
🐾 DIY obstacle courses – Use cushions, tunnels, and toys for indoor agility fun.
👃 Scent games – Hide treats around the house for a nose-powered scavenger hunt.
🎓 Trick training – Work on “roll over,” “spin,” or even “high five!”
📺 Pet-safe videos or music – Some pets love relaxing with a little screen time too.

🌡️ Staying indoors during extreme temps keeps your pet safe and gives you more quality time together!

🐕🐈 Drop a pic below of your pet’s favorite indoor activity—we’d love to see your creative cool-downs! 📸

🎆 Fireworks & Fur Babies: 4th of July Safety Tips:

While we may love the sparkle and boom of Independence Day, our pets definitely don’t! Here are some simple ways to keep your animals safe and calm this 4th of July:

🐶 Keep pets indoors – Even in a fenced yard, loud noises can cause pets to bolt.
🪟 Create a cozy, quiet space – Close windows, play calming music, or turn on a TV to help muffle fireworks.
🆔 Double-check IDs & microchips – If your pet does get loose, ID tags and updated microchip info help bring them home.
🚫 Don’t bring pets to fireworks shows – It’s not worth the stress (for them or you).
🔥 Keep grills, sparklers, and alcohol out of reach – Holiday food and gear can be dangerous if sniffed or snacked on.

📢 Need a microchip? Contact us! We offer microchipping for just $20—a small price for peace of mind.

Let’s make sure everyone has a safe and happy 4th—furry friends included! ❤️💙

📸 Share how your pet stays safe and snug during the fireworks below!

🐾 Alumni Sunday Spotlight! 🐾

There’s nothing we love more than updates from our adopted alumni living their best lives! 😍 Whether they’re couch potatoes 🛋️, trail adventurers 🌲, or professional snack beggars 🍖—we want to see them!

📸 Drop a recent photo of your adopted pet from our shelter in the comments and tell us what they’ve been up to! Did they just celebrate a birthday? Learn a new trick? Steal your side of the bed?

Let’s celebrate the second chances and happy tails that keep us going. 💛

Why Foster a Dog?

Fostering isn’t just a kindness—it’s a superpower! 🦸‍♀️🦴
Here’s how it makes a difference for everyone involved:

👩‍🦰 For You:
Enjoy the companionship of a dog without the long-term commitment. It’s perfect for animal lovers who want to help, but can’t adopt right now. Plus, you’ll be a hero in their story. ✨

🐕 For the Dog:
Shelter life can be stressful. A foster home gives them space to decompress, build confidence, and show off their true personality—making them even more adoptable.

🏡 For Us:
Fostering helps us free up kennel space, give more individualized care, and learn more about each dog. This info helps match them with their perfect forever home!

Ready to change a life? (Maybe even your own.) 💫
➡️

Our Foster Care Program has been established to provide potentially adoptable animals with temporary homes until they’re ready to be placed up for adoption at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Hi hooman friends, Pico here! 🐾🐱

Just a quick heads-up: the animal shelter will be closed on Thursday, June 19th for Juneteenth ❤️🖤💚. You can still fill out adoption applications online!

I’m currently living the foster life (and yes, I fully dominate the couch 🛋️), but I’m still holding out for my forever home—you know, one with a couch that’s mine forever.

So if you’ve been dreaming of a four-legged addition to your family (perhaps a charming, slightly sassy tabby like me? 😼), don’t wait—start the process today!

Purring patiently,
Pico

🐱🏡 Got rodents? We’ve got a natural solution: barn cats!

Our Barn Cat Program places spayed/neutered, ear-tipped, and vaccinated cats into safe outdoor homes—like barns, farms, or workshops—where they can live their best (semi-wild) lives and help you with pest control.

These Cat aren’t looking for cuddles—they prefer to keep their distance—but all they need is a cozy place to stay while they settle in, and then they’re ready to roam!

✨ Your farm gets rodent control and a bit of furry charm.
💻 Apply online to become a barn cat placement today: https://icanimalcenter.org/1056/Barn-Cats

Are you an empty-nester desperately missing the days where your newborn pooped in the bathtub every.single.time and you immediately had to change the water? The years when your preschooler was "allergic" to anything but sugar and junk? How about the teen years, where you weren't quite sure where you stood at any given moment? Boy do we have a fix for you!

Meet Fred (8yo female Indian Ringneck Parrot-left) and Squeaker (9yo female Conure-right)! These gorgeous girls are looking for homes where their humans can be patient while they adjust and learn to be loved somewhere new. They are not a bonded pair. We know their true personalities aren't shining here, but we can see a glimmer of what they could be.

"Squeaker likes fruit, especially papaya. She likes her food and water room temperature." -- In our care, we have learned she loves to be part of whatever you're doing and will steal your snacks and water. If she can hear you in the next room, she is sure to let you know that you are needed back in her space. She is a biter, but she doesn't mean it.

"Fred likes fruit, veggies (especially corn on the cob) and lean meats. She gives kisses, likes to play with toys and in tunnels and can be very dramatic when she likes you. She prefers her water cold and enjoys taking baths in her water bowl." --- In our care, Fred has been very aloof. She sings and comes to the front of the cage, but is hesitant to exit the cage. Her first day here, she was very sweet, but feels safest now that her cage has settled in.

**Priority will be given to adopters with former bird experience. These ladies will not do well in a loud home or with young children.

🎉 End-of-Week Shenanigans at the Shelter! 🐾

Another week of zoomies, and adorable chaos is in the books! From dramatic cat stretches to surprise slobbery kisses, our shelter stars have kept us laughing all week long.

🐶 Lukey, our resident old man, supervised the yard with wise eyes and distinguished charm
🐱 Cloud, the buff ex-street cat, meowed his way through every room—playful, talkative, and living his best indoor life
🐰 Shaq launched into some serious zoomies (watch your toes!)
🐱 Pico held her usual court, demanding scritches and admiration ( note she went to a foster for break)

Come visit us this weekend and see the silliness for yourself—or better yet, take home your very own goofball! 💛
