Instead of asking, “How do I get my dog to obey me?” we should ask, “Is my dog happy?” and “How can I make them happier?”

Hello Log cabin family, I wanted to keep you all abreast of the current respiratory disease that seems to be affecting dogs all over the country. While the exact cause of the disease is unknown, we are learning more about it every day. All the vets at Log Cabin are keeping up-to-date on all the current information and data that is available. I wanted to give you some information that we know and some tips to help you get through this holiday season. 1) Avoid public dog parks and areas where you know other dogs are frequent. This will reduce the chance of exposure until this disease is better understood. 2) If friends and family are visiting you for the holiday and bringing their dogs, ask if they are up-to-date on respiratory vaccines. Or if their dogs are having any symptoms, or their dogs could’ve been exposed to other dogs in boarding, daycare, groomer, or dog park situations. 3) Make sure your canine companion is vaccinated for all the common respiratory diseases. This would include Bordetella, influenza, and para influenza. 4) If your dog shows clinical signs or symptoms, this would include lethargy, coughing, poor appetite, or difficulty breathing, please seek veterinary advice and medical care right away. We are asking any patients that are coming into the hospital with a cough or any of those symptoms to stay in their car and call when you arrive. We will come to your car to examine your dog and determine the next step. If the dog has been sick for over 48 hours or is showing advanced signs we will recommend radiographs and possibly a PCR to see if we can determine the cause. stay safe this holiday week and we hope to keep you all safe this holiday season. Dr Erin Smyth
