From receptionists to veterinary assistants to technicians and doctors, each position has specific training and responsibilities. In this post, we'll break down who does what and how each team member supports you and your pet every step of the way.
Receptionists (CSRs) are responsible for -
Answering phone calls, texts, and emails
Scheduling appointments and managing daily calendar
Checking patients in - preparing rooms and collecting updated client information
Relaying messages between clients and medical staff
Providing general information about services, pricing, and policies
Managing prescription refill requests and coordinating with medical team
Directing clients to the appropriate team member
Veterinary Technicians & Veterinary Assistants are responsible for -
Obtaining patient vital signs
Restraining patients
Filling prescriptions
Obtaining patient samples like drawing blood, getting ear swabs, collecting urine, etc.
Performing diagnostics like running in house labwork, taking x-rays, making f***l smears, etc.
Performing patient treatments such as administering fluids, injections, oral medications, clipping and scrubbing areas, etc.
Performing routine care such as a**l gland expressions, nail trims, ear cleanings, vaccinating, etc.
Placing IV catheters
Prepping and recovering surgical patients
Monitoring anesthesia
Performing dental cleanings and dental x-rays
Charting of medical records
Communicating/Educating Owners
Veterinarians are the only ones who can -
DIAGNOSE by their exam findings, reading x-rays, reading labwork results, etc.
PRESCRIBE medications and order treatments their patients need
EUTHANIZE
PERFORM SURGERY - including but not limited to soft tissue surgeries and surgical dental extractions
