Let’s talk about annual wellness visits and their importance!
Larry (pictured below) is a perfect example—he’s visited us two years in a row for wellness exams!

Annual wellness exams are essential for preventative care and play a key role in keeping your pets healthy. Here’s why they’re so important:

➡Dental health: Small mammals are especially prone to dental issues. Catching early signs of disease can make a big difference in their long-term health.

➡Bloodwork: Routine testing helps us detect early signs of conditions like heart or kidney disease, allowing us to start treatment sooner.

➡Vaccinations: Many exotic species require or benefit from annual vaccines to protect them against serious diseases and viruses.

➡Continuity of care: Regular visits allow your veterinary team to get to know you and your pet, building a strong relationship for future care. It also gives you a chance to connect with the people dedicated to your pet’s well-being.

If your pet is due for their annual wellness visit, give us a call—we’d love to see you both!

🎉We have some exciting news this week! 🎉

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Crystal Matt has officially earned her board certification as an Avian Specialist! Many of you may already know Dr. Matt, and now we are proud to reintroduce her with this new title. Her dedication to avian medicine and her unwavering commitment to her patients make this achievement a well-deserved milestone.

Our team could not be more proud of her accomplishment and the passion she brings to our practice every day. Here’s what some of her colleagues at AEAC had to say:

💭 “I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Matt since her very first day at AEAC, and watching her grow has been such a privilege. Her drive and tenacity are inspiring—she is a brilliant, dedicated doctor, and I am so happy to see her achieve this milestone.”

💭 “I am so proud of Dr. Matt. She worked incredibly hard to get here, and I know she will continue to do amazing things. We will be here to support her every step of the way!”

💭"It's no surprise Dr. Matt passed her specialist exams on the first try- she's a genius and so so passionate about providing the highest standard of care for her patients, whether it's a tiny canary or a giant macaw. What people don't get to see behind the curtain is the long, long hours she puts in, the bonds she forms with patients, the respect and trust she has for her technicians and assistants, and what an incredible mentor she is to aspiring avian veterinarians. She has helped shape me in to the best technician I can be, something I will be forever grateful for. You know you're in good hands when Dr. Matt walks in the room."

I originally asked for brief words of congratulations, but it's hard to keep things short and sweet when speaking of such an amazing doctor!

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Matt on this incredible achievement! We know her clients—and especially her feathered patients—will continue to benefit from her expertise and compassion. 💙

It's getting a little too furry on our page, so lets add some feathers! 🪽
Meet Sourdough, a pigeon that was brought to ReWilding Indiana after he was seen walking abnormally. After an exam at the clinic and radiographs, it was revealed that Sourdough has metabolic bone disease. Metabolic bone disease is a condition commonly caused by deficiencies in the diet that effects the growth of bones.

Pigeons with this white coloration do not occur naturally in the wild, and are raised for event releases such as weddings, gender reveals, and funerals. Once they have been released, they are then left to fend for themselves in the wild. Because they are not raised in the wild, they do not learn how to forage for food and what is appropriate to eat. Because proper nutrition is vital for developing birds, Sourdough’s inability to obtain nutrient-rich foods outdoors likely contributed to his metabolic bone disease. His white feathers also mean he stands out more in both his surroundings and within a flock, leaving him more vulnerable to predators.

Despite everything, Sourdough has a great quality of life. With continued supportive care he is now thriving and being loved by one of our staff members! As always, if you have any questions about wildlife please reach out to us or ReWildling Indiana! 🦎

This week, we’re excited to welcome Dr. Hirschman, the newest addition to our veterinary team at AEAC!
Dr. Hirschman’s passion for animals began early in life when she grew up surrounded by a wide variety of species. She pursued this interest through veterinary school at Tufts University, followed by both a small animal rotating internship and a specialized internship in avian and exotic animals. At home, she enjoys the company of her two guinea pigs, Bob and Louie—pictured here with her!
We’re thrilled to have Dr. Hirschman on our team! 🦎

Here at AEAC we see a wide variety of species, some of which are more unique pets!

Pictured below is Dijon, who belongs to one of our nurses! She shared that her family knew Dijon was the perfect pet for them after medically fostering him for a rescue. Their bond grew during his many surgical procedures and hospital stays. During his foster period and recovery, Dijon began to let his personality shine. It wasn't long before his foster family knew they could not let him go and they officially welcomed him into their home!

Dijon's owner says "He brought something to our family that we didn’t realize we were missing and that we didn’t realize we needed until we met him.” ❤️

Exotic animals may find their owners in unique circumstances such as this, how did you know that your nontraditional animal was the perfect one for your family? 🦎

It's that time of the year when we welcome some new faces to our doctor team! 😊
Today, we would like to introduce Dr. Trowbridge, who has joined us as an Exotic Companion Mammal resident! Her love for exotic medicine grew at Ross University, where she served as class representative and secretary for the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association. She later graduated from the inaugural veterinary class at Long Island University while being involved with the Exotic Species Club. The little tortoise you see in the photo is her own personal pet, Tessie! We are very excited to welcome her to our team! 🦎

☀️ We’ve had a lot of rainy days here in Indiana, and we're really missing those sunny UVB rays! But hopefully our reptiles are not! ☀️
Whether they love the shade, or basking in the open sun, a majority of our reptile species need UVB exposure to stay healthy. UVB lighting helps them produce Vitamin D3, which is essential for absorbing calcium and keeping their bones strong. Without it, they can face some serious health problems down the road.

We recommend swapping out your UVB bulbs every 6 months. If you're not sure if yours are still doing the job, ask us about testing your bulb when scheduling your next visit at AEAC! 🦎

It is with a mix of sadness and excitement that we announce our amazing Hospital Director, Jess, will be leaving us to pursue her veterinary school dreams in Florida!

We are so proud to see Jess take this next step toward becoming a Veterinarian, where her love for animals, owners, and passion for medicine will shine!
Please join us in the comments in wishing Jess the best of luck on her journey and thanking her for all of her compassionate care over the years! 💚

🔥 Did you know that July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day? 🔥

Each year approximately 500,000 pets are affected by residential fires! Here are some tips on how to keep your furry, feathered, and scaly friends safe if a fire emergency happens:
- Know the quickest way to get your pets to an exit
- Have an emergency kit prepared specific to your pet
- If you cannot reach your pet safely, alert emergency personnel of your pets inside and any possible locations they may be (including hiding spots)
- Consider microchipping your pets, especially birds, in case they are missing after an emergency
- If you are not home, an emergency sticker can alert first responders of your pets inside (we sell these exotic-specific stickers, so grab one at your next visit!)

Most importantly, stay calm, act fast, and be prepared!

Does your family have a fire emergency plan for your pets? Share tips with other exotic pet owners in the comments below! 🦎
