ITS SKUNK SEASON! DONT RINSE YOUR DOG! Sharing post from our friend over at Staceys Styling Pets. The #1 thing people do when their dog gets skunked is trying to rinse them off. Skunk spray is an oily substance that doesnt mix with water that when you rinse your pet you are actually making that substance further pe*****te into the skin and increase the smell. The smell can last MONTHS! Instead, use the baking soda, dish soap, and peroxide method on a DRY DOG or call a groomer for help. Most dogs get skunked in the face and chest. Layer the paste on these areas thick without getting into the eyes. When you are done, rinse eyes thoroughly with a gentle spray. If you need help call your groomer for guidance!🦨
I had a client call me early this morning. Her poor German shepherd got sprayed by a Skunk. She told me she had already bathed him. Unfortunately she wet her coat first. I figured this is an excellent education moment. She is bringing her dog this evening after hours for me to bathe again with the mixture shown in the picture.
If your dog gets skunked and you want to brave it on your own, use this exact recipe shown in the picture. APPLY THIS PASTE TO YOUR DOG DRY. Make sure to wear gloves! Avoid eyes and mouth. Don't let them lick the mixture. It is key not to pre wet their coat as the smell just soaks right in. Let it sit for 5 minutes rinse, then follow up with a deoderizing shampoo and conditioner. Nature's Miracle is an excellent brand you can find at any pet store.
It likely won't take the smell out 100% but it will knock it down a lot. Yes I can sometimes accommodate emergency grooms such as this outside of business hours if you don't want to brave it yourself. Deskunk treatments are always an upcharge as is me doing it outside of normal business hours! 💗🐶
